I've debated this far more then is probably good for any human being, and it's gotten to the point where I've completely ignored it because I've been in it so long that I know exactly where it's headed before we even start, exactly what arguments are going to be made and the rebuttals. So, let's get this nonsense out of the way on a more permanent basis. Assuming we're competing at an elite level (i.e., assuming an elite level mixed martial artist and an elite level boxer) let's look at the follow aspects of combat sports and how well they'd do against one another; Boxing - Boxer wins 99% of the time (Not 100%, but as close to 100% as you can get but have to account for "lucky" punches) Muay Thai fights - A well rounded MMA fighter wins this about 75-80% of the time. Too many aspects of Muay Thai are simply unknown to a boxer and while he still can use his hands, the added variables will make things tremendously harder. The key in most cases will be the clinch and in less cases the leg kicks (shin kicks). Wrestling match - An MMA fighter wins this one every single time. This is 100% A Brazilian Jiu Jitsu match - Again, the MMA fighter wins 100% of the time. A Mixed Martial Arts fight - Because boxing is apart of MMA it thus gives anyone with any real background the ability to win (hence why you get the nonsense argument from boxing elitists that say an MMA fighter will never win in boxing but a boxer can win in MMA. Well, no kidding...), but similar to the Muay Thai fight just even less of a chance to win. Less of a chance, but pretty bad odds. The MMA fighter wins this 90-95% of the time. Now, here's where the trick comes in, and here is what almost no one realizes. We'll probably never have a boxer vs. an MMAist. Probably never. Now why do I say that you ask? Because the instant that a boxer starts to cross-train they are no longer just a boxer, they're morphing into an MMAist. They cease to become simply a pure boxer. What boxing elitists will argue is that boxing by itself is enough to win every time. (Yes, they are that unreasonable) So, under that idea they wouldn't need to cross train and they'd remain pure boxers but that would worsen their odds of winning an MMA fight/Muay Thai fight even more. There, simplistic but succinct. No more of this nonsense.
Agree with most of what you said but i think you can still put all your eggs in one basket if you have a boxer who hits hard and has a good chin.
Why debate it at all? Let the powers that be in their respective camps yell about that so they can fight over PPV dollars. I'm an informed fan and I'll watch whatever the hell I want.
Its cliche to use him, but Mike Tsyon against any MMA fighter in history, Muay Thai/Kickboxing rules, theyre allowed top clinch and to kick but cannot wrestle and take him down, i see him knocking them the **** out. And boxers have a far greater chance at winning in an mma match, than mma fighters have at winning a boxing match. A boxer has the chance to KO the guy on the way in as he rushes for the takedown. In a boxing match, the mma fighter is just a ****ing lamb to the slaughter.
Yes it is....but its not the same thing as saying he would in an MMA match, where its legal to punch a ****ing hole through skull, and thats what i said.
This is ridiculous. There are some **** poor athletes in both sports. A great athlete can sometimes just beat a **** poor athlete regardless of what they train. And as far as Muy Thai, I disagree. There stance is very squared up. They are very easy to hit. The only advantage a Muy Thai fighters has is that he kicks. But what makes you think a boxer can't make adjustments to his style and add leg kicks to his arsenal? Either way, like another poster said, I'm sorry, but no Muy Thai fighter in history can compete with Tyson or Lennox Lewis. Too much speed, reach, skill, and athleticism.
I have not said boxers ewould walk into MMA and clean up. But i will say the art of punching is the most valuable asset in any form of fighting. Our only natural weapons are our hands. You need your feet to walk on, your vital organs are in your body, your spine runs alongs your back. Wrestling(body), kicking(legs) are less natural as weapons. With your hands you can strike out at a distance without risk to your vital parts. Whether it be standup or ground and pounds the art of punching finishes most fights in MMA. The top fighters all have good hands. So yes, it is ridiculous comparing either way. But quite clearly boxers would fair significantly better in MMA, than MMA artists would in boxing. And being as an ancient past it Mercer KO'ed a former champ in 20 seconds, it is a topic worth being discussed, in my opinion.
