How do you decide which sports 'deserve' coverage.

No sports 'deserve' anything without doing something to merit it.

Boxing is a hard sport for casual viewers to understand (Wow, look at this guy, he's World Champion! Of course so are five other people and realistically he's barely top ten in the world...).

Boxing is failing to deliver fights that people actually want to see. Imagine telling a tennis fan that Mayweather and Pacquiao are the boxing equivalent of Nadal and Federer. "Oh really? Nadal leads Federer 14-7 in their head to head matches, a third of which have been grand slam finals. What's the score between your two boxers?" "Err, no see, they don't actually fight each other..."

Boxing is prohibitively expensive per hour compared to these other sports people mention.

If boxing sorts itself out and provides top fighters consistently fighting each other in a recognised format for less money, there is plenty of tv space to be had. Not going to happen though.

So the casual fan has more interest in world cycling trials snooker grand prix darts grand prix wolrd bowls championship than a British boxer fighting for a world title? I dont buy it

no but it costs the tv companies a lot less and promoters wont just sell a single fight to tv companies they'll want a contract which will guarrantee them a minimum number of fight which the casual fan may well have less interest in .

That said if promoters put on solid cards with the best british fighters fighting each other super six style and cut out the mismatches featuring "teak tough ghanians " and latvian cab drivers then casual fans would watch but thats never going to happen as they want to make as much money as possible with as little risk as possible.

If anyone was making that argument you would have someone to argue with.

Although the answer is yes when it comes to darts and formula one I'm pretty sure....

Dunno i'm sure more casual sports fans would watch say Ricky Hatton fighting for a world title than would watch darts and formula one . Even a properly promoted fight like froch vs abraham would do better . Most sports fans i know will watch a big fight but not everyone likes motor racing or darts .

I think they thing is to get the big fights on terrestrial. Its like cricket people want to watch england play but not so much the individual counties. I think people could get lost at British level keeping up with all the different domestic boxers but if you say to joe public here is a british fighter he is good hes fighting a world title fight agains this good guy it will do comparable numbers with ANY sport shown at a similar time including football

Actually boxing and darts generally do similar numbers on Sky. Darts is just more reliable, cheaper, stage more events that fills more hours and consistently sells out big arenas all over the country. Which would you show if you were scheduling?

16.2 million viewers for the title climax of last years F1. Froch counts himself lucky to get 162 viewers on Primetime...
