Merchant = Legend... 'THE FIGHT DIDNT GO MORE THAN SIX ROUNDS!' Lennox was an absolute dick in that interview, and refused to give Vitali any credit.
Lewis was obviously a little embarrassed at how the fight had gone. He was losing by one or two rounds, but he looked really rough compared to even his demolition of Tyson. Vitali was so upset, but there's no way that cut was caused by a butt, or that he was going to win. He finally looked to be wilting at the end of the sixth.
This fight is why I believe Vit is better than Wlad. Vitali may not have the pure boxing skills of his bro but he has the chin and better work rate.
Lewis had tried the right uppercut in close a few times before he pulled it off. Both men were mauling more as the fight came to an end: Vitali woulda been more of a state IMO and Lewis, being the better fighter, would've landed something similar and scrappily stopped him I suspect. Lewis did have a good chin, and didn't need to rematch Vitali. He knew he didn't have too many big fights left in him, he didn't owe Vitali anything, and having legitimately beat him. (it's not all about the scorecards) I feel he was justified in calling it a day.
Don't think he was a dick at all. Merchant was probably not giving Lewis as much credit as he deserved.
Is or was? What we see today is not the Vitali in that video. Whereas Wlad is 5x the fighter he was when this fight took place. Wlad is the more formidable fighter today. He's more athletic, he's a better boxer and he punches much harder. He might not have the greatest chin but he hardly needs it when he boxes so cleanly.
That's a great upload, thanks. Lovely upper cut from LL in Round 6, a real thumper. And I think thats about as pissy as I've ever seen him! (cue the jokes about it being easy to smack talk a pensioner holding a mic) but he seemed genuinely peeved!
I feel sorry for Wlad. He's an incredibly good fighter, with excellent skills. That ramrod jab is the reason he doesn't get adventurous - he doesn't need to. He's another of my replay fighters; crap to watch live in person or on TV, but a great technical study on tape later on. There's so little he does wrong and the opponent's limitations make it impossible to take advantage.
I still think he'd look less formidable against a fellow 'Great' Heavy. I'm not certain Wlad would look as seamless as he does today against even a Quarry or Lyle.
I had it 4-2 Vitali but the 5th could have gone either way. The main thing I love about this fight is Lewis took everything that a prime Vitali could throw at him and kept moving forward.
Well I think he was absolutely classless. Merchant was trying to make him eat his words after Lennox accused Vitali of being a bum with no skills or heart... as it was he just kept droning on about how he was going to finish him in the next round or so.
