Lewis was holding on to Vitali to keep from going down. Lewis was ready to go. Max Kellerman was sitting right behind Lewis' corner, he said he had never seen Lewis flop down on his stool like that. Lewis had a badly broken nose and retired rather than fight Vitali again. He is very luck he got the fight stopped on a cut. Vitali needed only one more round. Angelo Dundee said that Vitali was cheated out of the title that night. Vitali staggered Lewis, but Lewis could not stagger Vitali.
All I'm willing to say is that Vitali's chin is a ****ing fortress. Everyone talks about that uppercut in the 6th that Vitali walked through, but for me, the looping right that Vitali ate (looks a lot like the shot that Pac finished Hatton with) without going down in round 5 (40 sec mark) was just as impressive.
Nobody was dominant. Klitschko was up by a whopping 4-2 on the cards after 6. He had a grotesque cut, was falling all over Lewis toward the end of round 6 after Lewis hit him with a short right hand. Lewis slumped on his stool, exhausted, and Klitschko was not exactly a ball of energy either. There's no way to tell what would've happened if the fight were allowed to go on longer, with one guy exhausted and his opponent also tired, bloody, and hurt by his opponent at the end of the previous round. Thankfully for Vitali's health and career, the fight was stopped. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J659XD38u3c[/ame]
Lewis was ready to go, even Max said the same. You do not know Vitali, he has stamina, Lewis did not. Watch Vitali stagger Lewis. LOL! You are angry because Vitali and Vlad are beating all you heroes. Your favorite heavyweight is Haye.
Max Kellermen's a buffoon. Lewis was unprepared and old. He still won. Get over it man, nobodies talking about Wlad or Haye.
Tell Lewis to get into the ring. Lewis refused to do that. Lewis knew he would get knocked out. Man, his nose was so badly broken, they could have stopped the fight on that. Looks at Lewis' nose even after all that time. This fight should happen now!
There is no question the longer the fight went on the less chance Lewis had. The problem for Vitali is his face was pulverized to the point where it was deemed unsafe to continue. A clear and obvious victory for Lewis.
Didn't Lewis take the fight on very short notice?to go out and defend and be able to bust Vitali as bad as he did is pretty good for someone who was shot. But I believe while past his prime,he wasn't shot.Short notice fights when you're about to retire are a risky thing.
They were both training for other fights. Lewis for Kirk Johnson, and Vitali was supposed to fight Cedric Boswell. Johnson pulled out and Lewis fought Vitali instead.
Ah.I've seen the fight before but the only thing i remember was the announcers saying it was on short notice so i was under the impression they called and said "hey grab your gloves".Thanks for clarifying.
Vitali's chin is like concrete, you can't KO him just destroy his face. He would literally be a walking skull with his eyes hanging out and skin flapping about. There is no way anyone is going to KO him out cold.
Lewis was finished in this fight. The cut was made a lot worse by Lennox repeatedly rubbing his head and wedge of hair into it at every opportunity - watch straight after the punch that caused the cut, in goes his head and then again, and again from then on. Lewis had practically no defence and seemingly no stamina - he would hit and then attempt to lean on Vitali in much the same way he did on the much smaller Tyson. Vitali beat him to the punch and beat him up and although the stoppage was right given the condition of the cut (made much worse by Lewis clutching at it and butting, rubbing into it with his head) it could have been stopped sooner. Whatever way you look at at Vitali retired Lewis. For the record I think since then Vitali is pretty much a safety first fighter and incredibly boring to watch but Lewis was just a bad apple and consistently cheated like a mother****er!
I love how people say "This was Lewis at his worst". Maybe he wasn't at his best age or weight at the scales, but this is the best I've ever seen Lewis fight. Mentally and spiritually Lewis was at his peak right there. He fought with tremendous heart, determination and showed a rock solid chin. The stamina issues come from an incredible punch output that the 90s "chess player" version of Lewis never showed, punching one power shot after another. This happened on both sides. This was a war of attrition with both men unloading big artillery for as long as they could with Lewis edging out a somewhat lucky but justified TKO win.
