Obviously we're going to have two names again and again, but who do you round the list off with? Let's say, as far as film goes, we have to have seen at least 3 fights for a fighter to qualify.
Sorry, I see was supposed to do a top 5. atsch Maybe this: 1. Brown 2. Jofre 3. Zarate 4. Ortiz 5. Olivares
Watching film of Brown, it's difficult to imagine that he ever lost. He was near 6 feet tall, a skilled boxer and counter puncher, had power and a very solid chin, not to mention fast hands and feet. Manuel Ortiz also seems like a pain to deal with in close. Recently watched him knock down a French opponent for what looked like a dozen of times. Big fan of Olivares too. I've only seen Jofre vs Harada I & II & Medel I & II.
1. Joltin' Jeff Chandler (most underrated/underappreciated top 10 bantam that gets way to little credit!!!....+ he's from PHILLY BOY!!!) 2. Olivares 3. Panama Al Brown 4. Jofre 5. Ortiz
Philly through and through! Anyway, probably- Jofre, Olivares, Brown i agree on this one and i've neaten to it, he always features high on my lists, possibly the best pure boxer the division saw) Zarate, Harada I feel a bit psychotic not having the greatest bantamweight championof all time in my list, Ortizcould feature on any other day, but i'm just thinking that Harada may get the better of him and that it's a tie breaker. Maybe i'm wrong though, and i'm willing to accept that if i'm called out. Just thought that i'd mix it up a bit, and head to head, he's worthy of mention imo
These are probably the five names I would pick out also. I have to say though, i'm a wee bit surprised Canizales has not had a single mention. He is a board favourite.
I'm not so sure about Ortiz. He has a lot of admirers and was obviously very good, but the footage i've viewed didn't make as big an impact as i expected and the '40s was not a great era by any means for Bantamweight.
I think the guys are bad stylistic match ups for Canizales, all are better at what Canizales does. Ortiz looks to be an amazing inside fighter. I wouldnt pick any Bantam to get the better on the inside against Ortiz, and he looks to be tough as hell.
Hmm. Do you actually compare fighters to other greats in the weight class when assessing H2H ability?
How do you mean? None of them fought remotely similar to Canizales and most of them had styles that differed from each other as well. Pretty general statement.
Well, I think to be one of the best H2H surely you have to beat other greats. I think in all the fighters, they each did something Canizales did well, better than Canizales. Do you understand me now?
