Vito took way too many punches, and this bull**** tale is evidence of it. By the way, did you know that the reason Marciano retired when he did instead of going for "50-0"? Because Bobo Olson while sparring with Rocky before the Moore fight, decked him and made him look REAL bad..and that caused the Rock to call it quits at 49-0...honest..no kidding,.. really!!!!!
But certainly not by Bobo Olson, a facetious example that parodies the ridiculousness of this thread topic.
Well, he wasn't KO'd by Toxie Hall either but he got knocked down, and that's how most of these stories start. They're either complete fabrications or half-truths. This is true though:
How long would Olson have lasted if he'd somehow dethroned Moore and gotten the shot at Rocky? (And would he even have a career left when it was over?)
I'm afraid that Olson's career would have been truncated right there in the late 50's, instead of the mid 60's. A beating from Marciano was way, way far and beyond what Bobo could handle in my opinion anyway. Hell, the man was ko'ed numerous times by SRR and once(?) by Archie Moore..how much harder than they did Marciano hit? I'm glad Olson never made it past Moore...it would have shortened his life.
They would never take a chance putting Monzon in with a heavyweight like Joe Frazier. I have seen many middleweights beat the daylight over the less skilled big guys but never 2 top quality guys...too much risk
Right, exactly..it's just so ridiculous to even entertain this kind of bull**** rumor..when anyone with an interest in these two fighters and who followed the boxing press to any degree in the 70's would know of something like this happening if it did. And the thermonuclear publicity of a world middleweight champion and an ex-heavyweight champion being the players in an event like this would be impossible to hide by the press. The Argentine and for that matter the Latin boxing press would have taken the ball and run with this for sure. Monzon would have been a HUGE world celebrity far beyond what he was in reality instead of being a largely European and Latin star, which due to the ignorance of casual fans in the U.S. was the case.
I think Vito is saying "...and he knocked down Joe Frazier..." Either way, I don't take it very seriously.
