Vitali owes his entire career to Lennox Lewis

Yep, that's what get's missed in all these threads. Lewis was a monster in rematches, just ask McCall and Rahman, both of whom were tougher than VITLAY. Had Lewis been serious and taken the rematch he'd have trained like an animal and beaten VITLAY to a hideous pulp, the only people that refuse to believe this are the Klit-ites who think somehow that their guy would do better against a well prepared Lewis as opposed to how he did against a badly prepared one, where he damn near lost an eye

 

On what planet is Rahman tougher than V-Klit?? While I would certainly favor Lewis in rematch, your Lewis sack fondling is equaled only by Radar.

 

If Lewis were so successful in rematches and he was so assured of victory in the rematch vs. Vitali, then why didn't he do it? And why did he wait and stall for a year? Why did he demand that doctors make sure Vitali's plastic surgery was sufficiently healed before doing the rematch? Which the doctors did by the way.

Lewis knew he barely won a life and death sturggle with Vitali and wasn't sure he could win again. Before he stepped in a ring with Vitali, Lewis knew he was the Best. But after leaving the ring vs Vitali, Lewis began to have doubts about if he was still the Best.

Though he lost the first fight, Vitali actually broke Lewis down mentally and eventually chased Lewis out of the sport far sooner than he had expected or planned to leave.

Vitali lost the battle, but ended up winning the war. And he is still the champ, still the best. He has been a worthy successor to the throne after King Lennox vacated.

 

Wladimir Klitschko just took on Chagaev with the same notice. Chagaev was actually the WBA Champion at the time. So... there you go.

Anyways... you act like Vitali didn't have the same notice. At least Lennox was training for a 12 round Championship fight against a top contender. Vitali was only training for a 10 round undercard fight. Lennox was in great shape anyways, which is what saved him in the second round and allowed him to recover.

BTW... Lennox didn't want to fight Vitali that night... he had already turned Vitali down for a fight on that night and requested Johnson. The ONLY reason that Lewis took that fight is because HBO and the Staples Center absolutely refused his other fill in requests and told him that Vitali Klitschko was the only fight that they would take as a replacement. It isn't like Lewis sought out the fight or something. If anything... as Lewis said best before the fight... the short notice was in Lewis' favor. He was much more experienced in big fights, and Klitschko was still sort of green and finding himself as a boxer. Vitali's own trainers were saying that about him. Lewis' experienced trumps Vitali's age... when in fact Vitali was a much more worn fighter because of his kickboxing days... and still is. The man has battled serious injuries since the ams.

 

Opinions like that iswhy nobody would ask you.:good It also proves how hung up you are on the way that Vitali made Lewis look that night... and the fact that he chased him out of the sport afterward.

 

Yep, you're right about that. Lewis had to really fight Vitali or can the whole thing.

Not too sure about that. Vitali had a kickboxing background, and 30-odd professional boxing fights, and was what, 31,32 at the time?

At what point would he have been ready to fight Lewis if he wasn't ready then?

Vitali was getting ready to fight Boswell on the undercard, to be the next challenger to Lewis. He had a lot to gain by looking good in that fight - and to be honest, he's very professional in the way he prepares for fights and I can't see him being under prepared to fight anyone.

Lewis was getting ready to splat fatman Johnson all over the ring, and can be pretty unprofessional in his preparation against guys he doesn't rate.
(That's not an excuse, that's a knock on Lewis)

I think both guys gained something by taking the fight at short notice.

Vitali badly broke Lewis' nose, they retired him for good. Lewis has been offered huge amounts of money for comeback fight, but he is still running.

 

Quite different wouldn't you say? Vitali had serious injuries and two different surgeries due to injuries while training for the Rahman fight. He retired because he couldn't make it through a training camp without suffering major injuries. Which is why he took so long off from the sport to recover.

Lewis on the other hand sat on the title for 8 months after his fight with Vitali. He tried to get a fight against RJJ and also tried to sue Mike Tyson back into the ring during this time. He also promised everyone a rematch with Vitali, and even went as far as to make Vitali see Lewis' own personal doctor to find out of his eye was ready to fight. Vitali flew to London and was cleared by Lewis' personal doctor... and Lewis still turned down the fight. At that point, he claimed that 4 months wouldn't be enough time to prepare for a December fight with Vitali. He then says that he will fight the winner of Vitali vs Johnson. Calls Johnson to give him advice on fighting Vitali.... Vitali destroys Johnson in 2..... Lewis sits on the title for another couple months... the WBC orders Lewis to either enter negotiations with Vitali within 30 days or be stripped of his title.... Lewis retires a couple days later.


Quite a different scenario. Especially considering how the Lewis/Vitali fight ended.

 

A rematch NOW would be meaningless. Lennox more than once pointed out, he has retired for good. He IS not running from Vitali, and is not in the shape to take up a championship fight anymore.

He WAS hiding during the year it took until he announced retirement. And yes, I think he refused a rematch, 'cause he knew it would have been even more difficult to win than the first fight. Widdowmaker described it in detail.
