Saw a pic of Cotto this A.M. doin' roadwork on the Central Park bicycle path, which is pavement. Know as a former marathoner that THAT surface is the most unforgiving on the knees. Understand why runners like it: It's smooth -- can see well ahead, with less likelihood of twisting an ankle on a gopher hole, a rock, a branch, or whatever. But -- 'n it's a BIG BUT (no matter many world class marathons are run there) -- ultimately, it does irreparable damage to runner's knees. Understand that the Foreman fight's in N.Y.C and Cotto has to do final-week promotion, but wonder why his conditioner hasn't picked a better surface for his legs, considering what's a stake, and long-term. I think they're focused on things other than running surfaces. They [robably don't know a whole hell of a lot about running.
A week of roadwork isn't going to damage anything short term or long term. It takes years, similar to how tennis players damage their elbows and golfers damage their backs.
It depends upon how much running he is doing, of course. If he's not running that much on concrete and if he doesn't run that much past 35, he'll be okay.
a week is all thats needed... i was running 3 miles everyday for 6 days in a row, i slowly started feeling pain but decided to ignore it, on the last day i felt a very sharp pain and felt a little 'click', i was out for almost a year with a torn mcl.
I expect you're right, s, but it poses the broader question : Is Cotto -- 'n most other fighters -- doin' most of their roadwork on pavement? Beginning to think, with your of mention golfers and tennis players, it comes with the territory...like the mafiosos say: 'It's the life we've chosen'
Though it was over a longer period of time, R, it's just what happened to me. Ended me running for good.
Cotto shares that he runs 3-5miles a day around the beach on his most recent Road to Bronx episode. That means he typically runs 4 miles average. 4 miles isn't enough for a 12 round fighter. Now we know why he has stamina issues.
Cotto only ran on treadmills in PR...with Mayweather it seems like he does some running on treadmills during the day and hits the pavement at night.
thats bull**** running miles has nothing to do with anything joshua clottey runs 12 mile marathons, his stamina sucks, evander holyfield ran miles occasionally and he had 12 round wars.
I never understood how people have knee issues so easily. I used to run 5.5miles daily for months, jump rope for about 20mins, and I never had any knee trouble. This was all on the pavement. Then you have people like Relentless who get knee injuries after doing 3miles for 6days. I wouldn't say I have amazing bone structure, nor am I athletically gifted. Look at the intensity of their training.atsch Cotto doesn't ever seem to let his hands go quickly in training. Take a guy like Mayweather who seems to LOVE running and training at a high pace. He doesn't ever have stamina issues.
running miles has nothing to do with intensity. pacquiao throws thousands of punches and he runs miles only a few days a week, the rest of the weeks its interval training. running distance does not work the energy system required for boxing, sprinting/interval training does.
