Most important skill in amateur boxing?

Maybe defence? cause of the point-scoring system..

I would have thought hand speed or stamina, but these are just guesses

No, because of the shitty point system people somehow still score without landing. I would say punch output, most of the time the fighter that throws the most will win.

That's certainly not true. If you've seen international boxing from the last Olympics and up until now, you know very well that it's very hard to get points. Many fights end only 1-0 or 4-2, etc. Boxers only keep their tight guard, the opponent sometimes works and works and works, but doesn't score. The boxer with the guard counters with a left hook for example, then gets a scoring blow. Only very, very clear punches get scored.

Exactly. Low scores are the norm now. This is because judges were previously instructed to score punches that they think more than likely landed. Now they are instructed to only score punches that they are absolutely certain landed.

In regard to the thread question it's difficult to separate specific skills from one another in a hierarchical manner if you're talking about the fundamental aspects of boxing. It would be like asking a tennis player which is more important a forehand or a backhand. You need a certain level of proficiency in all the basic areas before you can even participate in the sport. And it depends on how specific you mean when you refer to skills. Is 'punching' a skill?

 

But Znaak, I think there is a difference between you on the international level, and most of the posters here fighting at the regional club level. Many club shows I've boxed at had a bunch of half-blind geriatric judges, who couldn't catch clear punches and gave matches on output. Defensive boxers, who you would think would benefit from computer scoring, actually tend to lose many close decisions at that level because judges score punches they take on the guard.
