Gene must have borrowed from his brother Don in that fight, as well as the second Tiger fight. Don Fullmer was a fair boxer but without the slugging ability of Gene.

That's like saying, "Larry Holmes was never under-rated. Only idiots under-rated him." Some of these guys (Chavez, Hagler) are ignored in certain ways by a significant part of the boxing community.

So Chavez didn't have great defensive abilities, and under-rated technical tools? If you don't class that as an under-appreciated skill then you must have a perverse idea of what skill is (namely: slick, black Floyd Mayweather/Roy Jones clones).

Anyone who knows about boxing knows they are immensely skilled.

A lot of people don't know about boxing then. Which is probably true, but they're still boxing fans.

When I think of "underrated", I think of underrated by the majority. Chavez is still a face first brawler to most people. Thus his skills are being underrated. Now if the thread was about boxers whose skills are being underrated by the supposed "experts" then it'd be different.

I don't think that the "majority of boxing fans" would think that Hagler was anything other than a skilled practitioner upon watching him box.

Well, Hagler is different. There's still a good amount of people who view him mostly as a pressure fighter though, based on the Hearns fight. The first two things you usually hear about him is that he has an iron chin and that he's an unstoppable force.

    Which are both natural observations.

The Hearns fight however was more out of ordinary for Hagler. He did not usually rely on relentless pressure or the ability to take a punch. He relied on his counter-punching skills and parrying.

McGrain, I have no idea what you think is up for dispute here. Nobody (least of all the TS) is claiming that everybody thinks that Chavez and Hagler are actually dog **** with no ability. But they do have certain overlooked skills and there is a false perception about their stylistic strengths, as TGA has pointed out. The point of the thread is to address those strengths.

In that case, you could name literally any fighter.

To offer a more extreme example, I would say that the type of person who thinks Hager is unskilled will miss the sneaky body attack of Sugar Ray Robinson, or the feinting ability of Roberto Duran, possibly the two most skilled fighters in all of the sport.
