I've never understood why boxers try and rip their opponents apart and make them sound **** before they fight them. Wouldnt it be better for them to praise there opponents as good fighters and therefore if they win it makes them look better.

I know a part of it is mind games and trying to make your opponent doubt himself but surely it would sound better if they said something like 'my opponent is a great fighter but i'm better and i'll expose them in the ring' instead of saying ' my opponent is a crap boxer and therefore im gonna beat the crap out of them'

It has always been used by boxers such as Ali, Tyson, Jones Jnr, mayweather, Mclellan etc.

    rant over

because more often than not, theyre not childish. only young minded fans get all uptight when their fighter isnt getting the right degree of credit. boxers are generally comfortable with the fact that everyone has an opinion and they dont sweat it when a few dumb ass fans try to knock ****.

It's a kind of defansive mechanism. They are afraid and insecure... the way to deal with it is to put your opponents down (and automatically yourself up).

Most of aggressive negative remarks are the product of this mechanism.

Basically here in the UK, when we use the term "he sounds ****", it means that person doesn't appear to be very good. So when you hear opinions of how limited Carl Froch is as a boxer, you'll say "That Carl Froch sounds ****".

    Completely agree with you.
I've thought this before many times.

Same with fans of a certain fighter. Bashing potential opponents before the fight about how so & so is no good, never was, a washed up has-been.

I would guess UK, especially if he had included the "e" at the end of it.

    shite...

being on ESB has really changed my slang vocabulary. When I say something like "windup" or "pisstake" my friends are like :blood

It's just part of the game. When the opposite occurs it is unusual. Clottey was sucking Pac's dick in the buildup to their fight, it was weird.

well...when a fight is considered a joke, they would do it the other way.

The presumed favorite would try to build up their opponent like what Floyd did to JMM or when Oscar was trying to convince everyone that Pac was a real threat.

it's good for their own mind frame as well as knowing their opponent will hear it ...and try to get in their heads and despirit them.... sometimes it works.... sometimes it pumps up the opponent to take their head off.

also ...great hype. Mayorga never really followed suit with his insults...but he always sold the fight. (he did beat fatboy vargas)

    24/7 adds to this..etc.

    I dig it.
