"The Hurricane"

I grew up in Paterson and I knew Carter and his partner in crime, John Artis. In fact I lived a couple of blocks away from the Lafayette Bar where the murders took place.

I first met Carter when he came into a ball field in Paterson, called the Riverside Oval." I yelled out his name and he turned and waved.

Later on he and a couple of his friends went across the street to a bowling alley, so me and a friend of mine followed him. As they started to bowl and Carter asked me if I knew how to keep score. I said I did, and he invited me down to do so.

After that I would see him again at the Oval and he would actually pitch softball for one of the local teams. If he saw me, he would say, Hi Kid, why don't you sit down with us, so I sat with him and his teammates on the bench.

When I was in High School back around 1967, my teacher asked me if I would like to go to the court house for a couple of days and follow the case, which I did.

I followed the case very close, because I really liked Rubin, BUT when I heard the whole story, I was sure that Carter and Artis did the act. In the movie they had a cop that would try to frame him, I know a lot of people that knew that cop and he was one of the best and honest cops around.

I even know Carolyn Kelley very well, as I use to ring announce for her and her husband, in the Robert Treat Hotel in Newark, New Jersey, but when I ran for the LBC President position this past December, they lied about me. They said that I said I had to talk for the Blacks, because they couldn't talk for themselves. The real story was that I said that I ring announce for Carolyn and her husband. The night of the elections, she told her head coaches not to vote for me, and they said they were. Right after the elections, she got rid of both of them. I also had some other run ins with them. By the way, none of the Blacks believed her, as they know me too well and I won the election in a landslide.

I really can't understand why they turned against me, because when they needed World Champion type belts, I brought her husband to the place that made them. The people that made the belts wanted to give me $50 for each belt, as they were going to raise the price up $50. I told them no, just give them the same deal as I had.

Ever since she lied about me, I have been wondering if she told the hold truth when it came to Carter. I always believed she did, but now I have some doubts.

Good point but I obviosuly didn´t mean a fluke like fluke but fluke like fluke. A thing that happens to a great fighter once in a while but the chances for this are very slim, if existent. Now what I mean?

 

I've been interested in this story for a long time and I've read up on it frequently including using your excellent site.

Fascinating accounts hhascup especially about Kelley.Its her word against Carters there but your story casts serious doubts about her credibility so I'll give Rubin a pass on that one.

I haven't made up my mind about the case 100% but the circumstantial evidence against Carter and Artis is strong and my gut feel is that they're probably guilty,especially when Carter's true character is taken into account and not his Holywood persona.

 

Wow -- There are some really fine posts on this thread. To sum it up -- The Hurricane movie is on a historical par with Rocky.

I disagree, I think Carter is all wrong for a smaller man who wants to stand in the pocket and trade. Its a styles thing, Carter has ATG P4P power and for a big puncher is mighty accurate
