I'm not saying Jones is better than Robinson but Jones is clearly better at many things than Robinson - speed, reactions, slipping punches, left hooks, stepping into the punch and timing amongst those things

 

Really? Have you ever seen Jones show greater speed than Robinson does in the sequence at 0:43? And he does all that with one arm, remember - which often takes twice as long.

Same as the film above. And he's doing this against an experienced fighter who knows how to counter - a fighter comparable to anybody Jones ever fought in his whole career. (It's easy to look fast against Glen Kelly.) Also bear in mind that we have much more of Jones in his prime than we do Robinson.

As do I. That earlier reply you gave saved me a bit of effort. The only facet of the game in which I might champion the clear superiority of Jones over Robinson is that of natural reflexes. And even that is tempered somewhat by Robinson having his natural reflexes tested by far greater opposition than the type that Jones generally faced.

 

Indeed - and that's significant. It's easy to slip punches from a cupcake who just throws a predictable jab over and over. Getting in complex, extended exchanges with a class opponent is the true test of reflexes (not to mention generalship, intelligence and skill), which Robinson did as you saw above and throughout his career. Jones came closest to it against Hopkins and Toney where he took his game to a higher level, but Toney WAS able to counter him effectively when he pulled up his socks. Robinson is far more proven.

 

The first footage is sped up So yes it looks quick because of poor quality footage. Robinson isn't nearly as quick as Jones

Robinson can't throw a left hook half as quick as Jones, sure he can knock out a stationary Fullmer

Greatness needs to be special to mean anything, thus you need to limit the numbers by separating Greatness from mere Brilliance and Excellence.

Yep. Though in fairness to Jones, he was an excellent ring general in his own right as displayed against Toney and Hopkins. But I still always thought that even his speed, athleticism and reflexes played second fiddle to his caution every time he encountered a real world opponent (even against McCallum, who was practically ready for an appointment with the undertaker by that point).

Tough pick because they both have a similar relative absence of great wins, Jones was the better talent possibly but Chavez has the win over Meldrick Taylor and he was just a hard *******

PP this is where we agree. tho Robinson put more behind his blows and was the more bludgeoning puncher, Roy was more the pin point accurate. I have Roy ranked ahead of Robbie in p4p
