Who Has The Better Chin... Liston or Foreman?

I disagree. I didn't see it, and don't believe it. that featherfisted tap couldn't knockdown my sister. Liston took a dive.

 

Williams, Valdes, DeJohn hit liston with everything but the kitchen sink and Liston didn't blink. Lyle knocked foreman down twice and nearly out.

Foreman!!!! When he got hurt and went down in his first career, he was young and winded. The second George was never knocked down!!!

 

It's possible. But either way, they've both been down a few times. But Liston was actually knocked out cold. Yes he was past his prime, but considering the shots Foreman took in his second career at an even older age I think this is paramount in ultimately finding Foreman to have the better chin. Just my 2 cents...

 

I don't know if you're the poster Suzie thinks you are but at the topic at hand I agree with you. You say it well... you almost have to assume Liston has a better chin to realistically think that.

 

He was knocked out cold by a man whos in the Rings top 100 punchers of all tine list. Leotis Martin could really bang. He killed Sonny Banks with his fists.

Do you think Martin punches harder or anywhere near the vicinity of a Cooney, Morrison, or Briggs? Granted he was a great puncher, but could you see him ever laying Foreman out? I just don't...

 

But again..Ron Lyle twice knocked down foreman in his prime. Can you see lyle twice flooring liston after the monsterous shots liston took off big cat williams?

 

I think Saddler may have inadvertently damaged Foreman's punch resistance early on with his water stupidity, but it seems to me that Foreman's later career proves his natural punch resistance superior and well above average.

 

I voted for Foreman.

I won't engage in speculation about the Lewiston, Maine fight. Against Muhammad Ali, Sonny was hit on the chin and officially took the count. Against Leotis Martin, Sonny was hit on the chin and took the count. George was hit on the chin by Muhammad Ali and officially took the count.

I won't say Sonny had a bad chin. It was very good. I just think George's was a little better. I admit it's a close call, though...in my opinion.

 

Great point. It could have done a number on his stamina too. I mean he was dehydrated at the end against Young.

 

With George, you also have to factor in he was KO'd when he was tired.
Except for Lyle who caught him good with a punch right on the chin as he was throwing. Have to go back and check that fight to make sure. Been on a while. Either way, Foreman's defense wasn't particular good.

Liston had better defense too. Even simply rolling with the punch will take sting off the punch.

But I'm not sure Liston was exactly training hard himself at certain points of his career.

I think some people over-look how important training is to keep your body strong...your chin strong. There is a certain level of "natural' ability that you are born with, but you still have to prepare your body and mostly importantly your mind, to take the punishment.

One guy can never get knocked out who has a lesser chin than someone else but because that guy with the granite chin is taking clean shots right on the chin, he can go out...especially the longer the fight goes on and he tires. A tired man is a dead man. Your hands drop, your jaw opens up because you are breathing through your mouth, your body wants to give up, your strength and energy are down...not a good recipe to stay up.

Of course you can factor other things as well with Chin. The punch you don't see coming can hurt you more than the punch you do see coming.

Guys with swollen eyes, blood dripping down disrupting their vision...not so good for a fighter that gets punched in the face.

And of course, always factor in wear and tear.
