Perez ducking Mares rematch

  1. Per Rafael's blog.

"Although promoter Gary Shaw would prefer to make a rematch between bantamweight titlist Yonnhy Perez and Golden Boy-promoted Abner Mares, who fought to a spirited draw on May 22, Perez's next fight will be a rematch with former titlist Joseph Agbeko. Shaw told ESPN.com that the IBF sent him a letter ordering him to begin negotiating the fight with Agbeko, the leading available contender, in order to satisfy Perez's mandatory obligation. Perez outpointed Agbeko in October in a slugfest to win the 118-pound belt. Shaw said he anticipates the bout taking place in October or November as a Showtime opening bout with junior bantamweight champion Vic Darchinyan in the main event. Shaw said he had hoped to put on a doubleheader featuring Darchinyan and Rafael Marquez in separate bouts, but it couldn't be done because of the budget available."

I guess this goes to show that Perez knows Abner won and that he doesn't want any part of him again, eh?

How do u figure? I know styles make fights but didnt Perez beat Agbeko and they have similar styles.

Perez just made a mistake in backing up. He finished much stronger. I think in the rematch Perez wins decisively.

Perez won a razor thin decision over Agbeko in a fight that could've gone either way and many had it a draw, both Perez and Agbeko are two offensive fighters but Agbeko is much more awkward than Perez and i think that awkwardness would give Mares problems.

As for Perez-Agbeko II i think it will be another extremely close contest just like the first fight and maybe another controversial decision.

The bantam division is one of my fav divisions at the moment with guys like Perez,Mares,Agbeko,Montiel,Vic,Hasegawa,Donaire etc theres so many interesting fights that can be made there, would love to see a tourney with those fighters.

He didn't finish much stronger. He won the middle rounds. Mares started better and finished better.

Wait - first granting a rematch to the guy you took the title from in an equally close contest constitutes ducking the person you drew with in your first defense?

    What bull****.

If he beats Agbeko and then doesn't give Mares a rematch shortly thereafter, then talk.

  13. Because it's pretty clear that Mares got the better of Perez for one. Another, the fight just happened and was scored a draw. Perez actually won against Agbeko, so, it seems to me that Abner has EARNED an immediate rematch since, at the very least, he was able to earn a draw while Agbeko lost to Perez. Abner poses matchup problems for Perez and that was clearly seen in the first fight. Agbeko is much more straight forward and a less risky proposition.

You must not understand the concept of a mandatory?

  15. Fights weren't "equally" close.
