Which style gave Lewis the most trouble?

see i agree with everything you said about the lewis vs mercer fight other than ONE thing

mercer was notoriously a horrid trainer. by that i mean it took alot to motivate him to get into GREAT FIGHTING shape. other than that i think mercer was one of the most under-rated fighters of his era and if focused, motivated, managed and trained better could of been pretty awesome instead of one of the best in his prime

the part i dont agree about is mercer for a few fightz came into the ring in top shape. one of those few was against lewis. im not just talking physical conditioning but also mentally prepared as well. so to say, "if mercer hadnt faded so badly down the stretch" createz the illusion that all the WORK he did before the STRETCH wasnt the real reason mercer faded down the stretch. simply put i feel all the work mercer did before the stretch waz the reason he had nothing left down it.

personally i feel lewis came into that fight way OVER-CONFIDENT as he did on quite a few occasionz throughout his career and i feel it nearly cost him the fight as IMO the fight could of been scored for mercer, for lewis or a draw as it waz litterally that close. i remember thinking at the final bell that mercer could get the nod.

the funny thing is i alwayz had the feeling that his fight with mercer was the TURNING point in lewis's career as i felt that lewis came into that fight in decent shape and was over-confident he would just out box mercer over 12. when the fight started instead of lewis gradually getting the better of mercer he became aware that mercer was in fact getting the better of him and became aware that mercer had come not just to fight but with the confidence and game plan to win the fight by knockout or by decision. why do i feel it waz such a TURNING point in lewis's career? because lewis couldnt really adapt to mercer and didnt really have any tricks left in his bag as mercer was such a god dam bulldog. to me this is the point that seperatez the champz from the contendorz as up until that time lewis hadnt been in a fight whereby he was getting beatin or handled round after round after round. so i felt that lewis at one point had to deal with the truth that mercer could be knocking him out or just plain old beating him and then had to deal with the truth that he really didnt have any different changez to make that would help him. therefore what i took from the lewis vs mercer fight was that lewis halfway or so through the fight basically said to himself if he beats me he beats me but im not giving up and he did the what all champs do and thatz just focus and stick to what got them there without doubting himself or worrying about being behind etc etc.

when lewis did this and showed mercer that it didnt matter to lewis that mercer had been getting the best of him and let mercer know that he still waznt going away it was mercer that began to press even harder, tired himself out and let lewis back into the fight

thatz what makez a great champ, a guy that can find a way to keep scoring and just keep confident when thingz are not going his way

additionally i think lewis got a huge and helpful wake up call during and after this fight and became a much better overall fighter after it

off topic i alwayz wanted to see mercer vs tyson prime for prime both in great shape as i really cant think of a better match up on paper than those two pitbulls going at each other

 

Briggs, Grant, Ruddock and Mavrovic all put pressure on him, and. Well...

Did you SEE what happened to Grant? I mean sure he is not the greatest fighter in the world but he was BLASTED out of there, same with Briggs. Lennox was not afraid to get into a real fight as much as the K Bros. His chin is nowere near as bad as people tend to make out i mean he took hard shots from alot of punchers and very rarely was in trouble or went down.

 

Lewis always seemed to have more trouble with smaller fighters then the larger ones.

Ossie Ocasio was under six feet tall, yet he was the first fighter to take Lennox the distance. He didn't particularly trouble Lennox but he was among the handful of people to go the distance with him during the first five something years of his career, the other two fighters being Tony Tucker and Levi Billups.

Levi Billups himself was only 6'0.

Evander Holyfield was 6'2, and twice went the difference. He was also a former 190 pound CW and very old at the time.

Ray Mercer was 6'1.

David Tua is extremely short, at 5'10.

It's strange that when you look at the fighters that took Lennox Lewis the distance almost all of them are shorter HW's, three of those decision losses being against former 190 lb Cruiserweights.

 

The Liston of 1958-1959 was certainly faster than 36 year old Ray Mercer, and Frank Bruno.

Lewis wasn't threatened as much against the smaller adversaries, you will notice this, as he was more comfortable to stay behind the jab against the shorter foes. It was the taller heavyweights that proved more of a danger to Lennox, which is why the most of them were dispatched...

 

Holmes kills him in his prime...Everything Lennox was known for, Holmes did it better...

 

Holmes would beat him but he ain´t killing him. And Lewis would take one in a series.

 

Well Lewis was obviously bigger and more powerful than Holmes and he also had a mean left hook, but it would be a horrible fight for Lewis, I think a young Lewis with the handspeed could beat him and the mid-late era one would have to make things a bit ugly and chase him down a bit

 

A fighter with a solid chin who is willing to take a few on his way in to touch that chin. Lennox had a good chin but had trouble with recovery

 

Conclusion: the toughest style for Lewis would be Wladimir Klitschko.

 

Pressure. Lewis was a bit of a sissy frankly, and somebody who could attack him fast and drag him into a war could cause trouble.

Liston would have virtually no chance against Lewis IMO. He doesn't have the legs.

 

With the exception of klitschko,who he stopped anyway, any fighter near his own size got jumped on early and KO'd
