Tim Witherspoon vs. Jimmy Young

I think the JY of the seventies would outbox the sometimes lazy and unfocused Spoon. The flabby Young of 1980 and beyond would not beat him though.

At both men's best,I take Young to win a convincing decision. Too elusive for Witherspoon,and Jimmy would repeatedly score with counters.

 

And that wide looping right hand is not going to land on a prime jimmy young. He'd see it a mile away and counter the guy to death. That sneaky straight right hand of young's is the right hand landing in this fight. Decision bout all the way.

 

Tim Witherspoon would be made to look stupid against Jimmy Young...end of thread, for all practical purposes.

 

The Young of his 11th pro fight vs Shavers wouldn't beat Witherspoon either...but what does that mean? Hypothetical matchups ideally mean one man at his best vs another man at his best. That means the Jimmy Young of the mid 70's vs Tim Witherspoon of his best era...and Young would outclass him as easily as he did Lyle or Foreman. Young W12/W15 Witherspoon.

 

I think Young simply troubled too many good fighters, and had a set of whiskers that would have withstood Spoon's best. A focussed and trained Witherspoon would take a few rounds on the cards, and make it a close fight, but at the end of the day, Young had the right style to take this one..

EDIT - I would like to point out however, that Spoon did go toe to toe with Tubbs, Page and Holmes, all of whom were very good boxers and in some cases, more consistent than Young... Tim also beat the first two on that list, while giving the third a real hard time... I still pick Young by a very close verdict, but not with much conviction..

 

Young would beat him handily.

 

Depends on which Tim shows up to fight Jimmy.If motivated, he takes a somewhat close decision, if not, then he loses a near-shutout.

 

Young has been flavour of the month for at least the last 30 of them in this forum.

Young was indeed underappreciated when he was at the top of his game, not least because he was bore...

Young would give Witherspoon a headache (figuratively, and probably, literally), but prime Terrible Tim would solve the problem in the end, and as well as being nearly as cute defensively, he was far more impressive offensively than Jimmy.

Young would be in the fight for a long time, but Witherspoon's extra class tells in the end to get the close nod.

Jimmy Young has been a highly regarded favorite of mine since his heyday of the 70's...that goes way back, so it's hardly a "flavor of the week" deal for me, lol. Your take on this matchup differs from mine TBooze, but that's all right, cause opinions differ and that just sweetens the pot all the more and makes the forum more interesting, IMO.

 

I really like Witherspoon. At times, he was like a Jimmy Young with more power. But Young is in a whole other class. I see Spoon being frustrated, and countered all night long. Young UD
