Whether he put on weight intentionally or not, who knows, the fact is it made him slower and less conditioned and instead of making him stronger made him only fatter. Tua has a tendency like many Somoans to carry a great deal of bodyfat. Either way like most short fighters he faded quickly If he had a good conditioner/nutritionist that new how to help him add weight in a similar way to Holyfield it wouldn't be an issue People talk about Tua not achieving much but he has a better resume than most fighters of the last 10years
Tua just needed to stay active. He was very active coming up. Once he became less active and stopped training year round he lost a lot in his game. Realistically they needed to get him a title shot around the time of the Ike fight, but noone wanted to fight him.
The funnest Tua story was in order to lose weight they used to have Tua stay in a bath of ice cubes for as long as possible. The theory is your body burns energy to warm the body up in the ice bath. When a fighter resorts to things like that instead of training its pretty clear he's past what he was, its like when Bowe supposedly resorted to using the sauna to cut weight as if he was a featherweight trying to sweat the last 2lbs off
No the funniest Tua story was when he refused to run the stairs of Philly to promote his rematch with Rahman.. Samoan heavyweight David Tua skipped an opportunity yesterday to run up the stairs of the Philadelphia Museum of Art alongside hometown hero Bernard Hopkins, who duplicated the scene that immortalized a pug named Rocky in the 1976 movie classic starring Sylvester Stallone. Tua, instead, was driven to the top of the stairs. Perhaps he figured he didn't need the exercise. Yesterday, Tua weighed in at 245 pounds for his bout tonight with Baltimore's Hasim Rahman at the First Union Spectrum.
You guys give these athletes anything just so you can make sense of a comlpex world. After all, teh Tuaman can naat fail!23324. How the **** do you guys know what Tua did and did not do intentionally? "The fact is" BS is suggest guess work shaped by religion. A 220 Tua probably would have been beaten far, far worse by Lewis.
I think a 300 lb Tua would have no doubt destroyed Lewis in 5 rounds, too bad he couldn't quite reach his goal before fight night.
No. Only a 229 Tua would have beat Lewis. We never hear about him. 300. 220. 240. 245. What happend to the 229 guy? That one is the best.
The Mongoose Archie Moore calling out Marciano. .....That didn't work out too well for him, but the guy was one of the best interviews in the sport.
:happy One of the p4p greatest-on a short list and one of the most charismatic and intelligent champions I've ever seen. :thumbsup
