If so how do you rate him?

He held the unified welterweight title but how strong was the division at the time?

He beat Mayorga? Some say it was a robbery but Mayorga was terrible at cutting down the ring and didn't really land anything the whole fight

Did well against Latimore after a long time out and trouble with weight

Had a little stint at middle weight when he took on JT in what was the most boring boxing match i have ever seen (narrowly edges out Wlad - Ibragimov) but was a respectable showing considering the disadvantages he faced.

He's definitly world class, to have as little power as he does and still manage to be comptetitive and win most of his world class fights is amazing. His boxing skills are definitly A+ but he loses points because of his lack of power

The guys a classic B fighter - always in contention, but never really beaten anyone worth mentioning (besides Zab).

This guy had the paper championship, not Yuri. Anyone decent at 154 would destroy this guy, but don't expect him to fight any of them any soon!

Perfect opponent for Cotto to get properly initiated at the weight!

I'm with ya on the B-fighter status but he was anything but a paper champ. He was the undisputed, lineal welterweight champion, say what you want but that can't be taken away from him.

I disagree, he beat Karmazin who was the #1 jr middleweight in the world and he beat a Mayorga who was coming off 2 huge wins over Forrest and then moved up to middleweight and fought the champion (Taylor) to a split desicion. I think I would pick Spinks to beat Cotto in a close fight actually.

Cory Spinks is a top echelon fighter but not quite champion caliber. Against the absolute cream of the crop he usually doesn't win. He is crafty and quick but has no punching power. His ring entrance WAS the best until it became too choreographed and played up.

At his peak a B+ fighter. Nice jab, great movement, defense and ring IQ.

But what does Spinks bring to the table?

He is outskilled by almost all the high-ranking opponents at his weight, and he knows this - hence he never fights any of them.

Dzinziruk, Martinez, Cintron, Angulo, Rhodes - All top fighters. Yet Spinks displays no interest in fighting any of them. Sounds like a real champion to me...:yep

He's boxing skills are way overrated. He's a poor mans Chris Byrd and saying something.

I would really love to see Cotto take on this challenge. I think he destroys Cory at this point. 3-4 years ago he would have put up a MUCH better fight than Judah

Seems like everybody has the same "B+" grade for him. Same thing here. The guy had a decent run a few years ago, but I don't see him beating many of the top 10 at 154 right now.

As many stated before a typical B class fighter indeed. He just doesn't have remarkable physical attributes to make it with the A level fighters imo.

    A. Spinks had excellent boxing skills but unfortunately not the power to go with them. Underrated due to his boring style.
