looking at his old fighters it looks like he had them all fighting tall with minimal head movement now last weekend looking at cotto he got him to fight tall, which isn't really a bad thing but cotto is a short stocky guy, he should be moving his head alot more than he does at first i thought steward was a good coach for cotto but now im begining to wonder if cotto made the right choice.
Yeah, you would have thought that improving Cotto's infighting would have been the natural choice, but it seems like all steward can do is teach boxer-types too bad
well he's a firm beliver in Keeping range and controlling with a stiff strong Jab usally his fighters jab prevents most fighters from just bulldozing through them . most of the time the only time his fighters have trouble is with the swarmers who are usally not a a extreme siz disadvatage with an Uncany Iron chin. Ie, Brrewster vs Klitshko 1, Hearns Vs Hagler, Cintron vs Margo, Vera vs Lee. just a few off the top.
More to do with getting the head and upper body out of the way completely rather than waggling it about up close. That...doesn't sound right.
The jab is the Key punch to usally neutralizing another fighters Speed Advantage. which is why Cotto was able to keep up with Yuri, it also offsets the Rythme of a fighter and creats Distance and An opening. belivies in this system and it usally has greeat success as long as the fighter is diciplined. most of the fighters he drops is because they aren't diciplined I.e Hamed!
steward is overrated just like roach and mayweather.. the real trainers are in the trenches of all the gyms around the world.. they been doing it for years but they dont have the names or the reputation to make it to the top :hat
Steward is not ****ing overrated, and neither is Roach. Some fighters that steward has coached on some level: Hearns, Benitez, JCC, DLH, Hamed, Holyfield, W. Klitschko, Lennox, Toney, and Cotto... Roach's list: Pac, DLH, Tyson, B-Hop, Toney,W. Klitschko, Khan, Vazquez... These guys are all HoF entrants(or possible future entrants) and some of the best the sport has ever seen. You cannot be considered overrated as a trainer if people like these have come to you for guidance. Period.
sometimes you just need luck to come across a prodigy.. is not what you know is who you're teaching it to... tito trinidad's father has been a boxing trainer for over 30yrs and only when his own son became a champion did he get such recognition and all puertorrican fighters started flocking to him to be train by him hearns is the only boxer that steward taught him all he knew cause he had him from the beggining.. right now all steward is a hire mercenary.. he uses his reputation and fame to get money and train boxers already on top.. anybody can train the klits and help them win all those boxers you mentioned were world champion before steward got to them :hat
Steward's a great trainer. He's had many world champions but, most importantly, he gets fighters to believe in themselves. He works on them psychologically, while using their natural gifts and style with some subtle tweaks. Cotto needed to stop hunching, because he's not relentless enough to carry that style off. So, Manny's got him working as a patient guy, who uses movement and angles to set up his offence and only fire the big shots when there's a clear opening. It took a little time, but Cotto went from single, hard jabs to quick 1-2s, to thudding jab-straight-hook combos. He was breaking Yuri down. That was Manny's influence. Take it slow when you're in control. Control the pace and **** the other guy up.
what about the changes he made to lennox lewis and wladimir klitschko? i dont know if you were a boxing fan when lewis was active or before wlad got with steward.
