all dougie would say " I heard a rumor that a former titleholder out of the Kronk gym in the 1980s (who shall remain nameless) got a bl__job from his girlfriend before at least one of his fights. I have no proof of this. I’m just telling you what I’ve heard from more than a few former regulars of that now-defunct Detroit gym."
i also heard that santos would have been a far greater fighter if he wasn't chasing women so much.according to dundee's book the same can be said tony jarino

Most Cotto fans refuse to accept Margarito beat his ass fair & square.
(& refuse to acknowledge that the commission provided the gauze used)

Because some guys have touched on it, lemme chime in on beard.

Again, like hand speed and punching power, the ability to get hit on the button without going out is genetic; it's the thickness of the skull that incases the brain. You can have a neck the size of the Alaska Pipeline, and balls to match, but if you're not wired right and that switch is flipped, it's lights out.

All the neck bridges in the world won't put Humpty Dumpty back together again.

You can rightly call LaMotta, Labrado Andrade, Chuvalo 'n Tex Cobb thick-headed. As for special wiring, Billy Graham stands out -- not an imposing physical specimen, but never dropped in over 200 pro and amateur fights. Great stand-up, textbook boxer, with a concrete chin.

I think you can improve both speed and power, but of course, only to a certain extent. Felix Trinidad and Tommy Hearns weren't powerful punches in the amateurs, but look at them in the pros. However, their power is something that at the same time, they were born with. They just needed proper teaching in order for this gift to come out. Most fighters could have all the proper teaching and practice they want, they won't hit like Tommy or Tito.

For speed, you can practice a lot and improve muscle memory. Your reactions will be quicker. You can get the proper form to shorten up punches, so in essence your punches get there faster since it's travelling less distance. If your stamina gets better, then your punches won't be as slow as the fight goes on. But as far as going from a guy with decent speed to a Hector Camacho Sr...it's never gonna happen.

Wishful thinking, BF. It's the Holy Grail that has fighters working tirelessly for years, to no avail.

Not everyone can run like Usain Bolt, but everyone can sure as hell improve their sprint times with practice and training.

Likewise, not everyone can be lamotta or hagler in the chin department, but they sure as hell can improve on it.

Not everyone can turn out to be a human calculator, but they sure as hell can improve their mental arithmetic with practice.

Fair point, d, about Bolt, with the state-of-the-art technique training. But no amount of training can improve a beard.

Not sure of your point about "mental arithmetic." Does it mean: with practice the geometry is better to land more solid punches and evade incoming?

The basic science in punching power is Mass/Speed/Distance.
Mass = the size of the boxer. There is a reason heavyweights tend to have more power compared to the lower weights. In terms of power bigger is better.
Speed = the speed of the punch from firing the shot to hitting the target
Distance = the longer the punch travals at a constant speed or gaing speed the harder the punch.
Both Pavlik and Hearns might not have the mass of a heavyweight. However they have the same mass as their opoents. Both Pavlik and espicaly Hearns throw long quick punches. They have due to their height the ability to throw punches from long distances and the speed to get them to thei target with devesting power.
