This is one of the best displays of pure speed , reflexes and smart boxing ever. Look at his footwork and amazing reflexes. He was fighting the P4P number one and was the underdog and he shut him down. Dont give me that crap that Toney lost to much weight. He looked the same as he always did. He legs looked fine and so did his speed and defense. There was no difference except he was in with a freak of nature. Jones would rip him with hooks then slip out of range , he would potshot at times and throw punches that werent clean but kept james on the defensive. It was the perfect gameplan executed perfectly. Ive seen prime Ali , Leonard , Duran , Louis and alot of Robinson , Pep and others BUT ive never seen a beast like prime roy. He a great Come Forward Destroyer and a amazing Slick Boxer. Who ever could fight both styles so well?
It seems like common knowledge that Toney was weight drained. Toney had problems making weight several times. Earlier that year JT fought as a damn cruiserweight. Great display by Jones, of course though.
It was an awesome display. If i'm revisiting either my Jones or Toney career sets I quite often get stuck on it, I just want to watch it over and again.
I think after a couple of years of Jones bashing, people are starting to revisit his career and give him the props for the amazing boxer he was. at his best he was being compared to sugar ray, at his worst , he was a um. I think his name is arguably amongst the top 25 to ever lace em up in this sport- and deservedly so. What he accomplished speaks for itself. His losses were bad- but to make excuses for them, they all came at the tail end of his career against bigger men- people forget how small a guy roy was, 5'10 , 5'9 maybe- and in there with all the big boys- he carried his power and speed so well- that people forget how little he was. If Pac were to lose against bigger men now- people would put it in perspective, roy was never given that benefit, people couldnt wait to bash him. Every great fighter had bad losses at the tail end of their careers- roy was no different. the only difference is that his decline was rapid and steep as hell. but his peak was long and dominant as any middle weight class fighter that we ve had in the past 40 years.
couldnt hav said it better brother..... now to crusify these dickheads that post stupid **** on this forum about glass jaws and always riding roys dick over his losses.... help me smash these ****in idiots
I haven't seen the fght in it's entirey but this is the impression I got from it. The fight itself was also a bit ugly and akward for my tastes.
I've said it many times before...Roy Jones at his peak was a beast...His combination of speed and power was simply above anybody before or since...There is'nt a single fighter in history I would favour over a prime Roy Jones from 147-190..not even the legendary Sugar Ray Robinson... The only drawback for him though...say what you want...cats like SRR,Homicide Hank,Foster etc accomplished more than Roy Jones could ever dream about..Let's face it,in terms of just pure accomplishments, nobody in this era,RJJr included can even come close to these dudes in terms of what they accomplished by the time they retired..SRR was 142-1 at one time...there is simply no way any body from this era can compare to that.. Roy Jones had a couple of great fights in his era that could have helped with his legacy..Eubank,Benn and later Calzaghe...not entirely his faults these fights never happened...but he can't be given credit for fights that never hapened either... But as a fighter..one-on-one..in his prime...few in history could hang with this dude...IMHO,Roy Jones had the speed and power to have have KO'd eevry fighter he met..except maybe for Hopkins..He was that good.
If you give me, lb for lb, one fighter during his peak and prime, to fight anyone anywhere in any era, between 154-190lbs, I'll take Roy Jones 99/100 and put all my savings and house deed on it. the Man was untouchable... no SRR, no Leonard, No Hagler, NOBODY would sniff more than a couple of rounds from him, let alone have a chance to beat him. I can guarantee you that in 20 years, people will look back and still talk about him as one of the best that ever lived during his prime.
Griffin and Harding did it and they are nowhere near all time greats. I love Roy Jones but hes starting to get a bit overrated, yes he was great but he wasnt an unbeatable god like some make him out to be.
Prime Roy Jones was in a world of his own. If (and I know it's a big IF) he had retired after the Ruiz fight. I think we would be talking about a top 10 ATG.
it's pretty well documented that toney was badly weight drained even by his standards but regardless of how good/bad his conditioning was, he was simply too flat footed to deal with jones.
