What he looks to have done to me is just brushed up on Cotto vs swarmers. He's probably looked at the Margo and Pacquiao fights, and seen that after they had found their rhythm they just bull-dozed though him. Cotto has always had a powerful jab, now that's he's using it in the right manner and he's got his guard sorted he's got a greater chance of keeping guys like Angulo off him.
lol run out of ideas? how many different ways can you train a boxer...look i already said that steward is talented and know what he's doing just like roach, but they're not head and shoulders above the rest like some people like to say, they were just lucky... and not all amateur trainers are on their level.. but i know a few that are no names trainers that can do the job they do if given the oportunity.... boxing is boxing in any level and you get taught the basics and you take it from there... boxing trainers are there for dicipline, motivation and guidance but the boxers does most of the job.. and is easy once you know what you're doing all you need is good sparring partners and a good plan and routine and surround yourself with people that have cojones to tell you the truth and that care for you and will fight for you... is not hard.. the hard part is to get into the circle after that you're good :hat
He has done a good job with his fighters, but I think there is a lot be said for experiance at a top level. Threre are great trainers out there at all levels, but its like all sports, who do you pick; a trainer who has experiance with the best, or a trainer who, although may be good has never been the corner in a vegas title fight?
But in the process Cotto is losing what used to be his best strength-his inside game. His bodywork was terrible against foreman except for that last KO hook.
Yeah thats the thing is he likes to keep his guys at a far range using the jab and most of those guys like lewis, wlad and hears were really tall so when they were out of range they didnt need to use head movement
like i said, steward is accustomed to train heavyweights so head movement is not much of an importance and steward is applying it to cotto. jab jab jab jab jab and followup straight. :yep
good coaches are also good psychologists, they know what buttons to press to get reactions. oh and puertorricane there are plenty of different methods of training a fighter, why do you think all coaches and boxers dont mesh well? and if what you're saying is true about famous trainers get alot of fighters (its true sometimes) then why did kevin rooney have no success with other boxers? were they not talented enough?
Yea....Manny is a great trainer but I think he's so use to training HW's like LL and Wald that I thought it might be difficult for him to adjust to Cotto who is a WW. But I think Cotto looked good. Still had the same style but some minor adjustments made a lot of difference. I honest thought Yuri would present a VERY difficult style and it was in spots but Cotto looked really good against a very difficult bigger man. Cotto had little to worry about by way of Power but I was surprised he litterly outboxed Yuri.
Steward is overrated. He was lucky Foreman slipped and twisted his knee. Foreman lost to himself and not to Cotto.
I agree, a strong jab is a powerful neutralizer and can greatly help in keeping opponents off balance and from gaining rhythm. btw, Hendrix isn't at Woodstock in your avatar!
You're reaching....Yuri was clearly being outboxed. Yuri lost b/c he wasn't the better boxer or fighter.
steward needs to make cotto use the right alot more, its a good punch, he hurt foreman with it more than he did with his left.
