Hagler is the better man and always would have been! Hagler was the toughest mother****er to ever wear a pair of gloves. Impossible to hurt and a bonafide and TRUE warrior!

I love the Hitman but he's second best to Marvelous - which is hardly a disgrace!

Yeah, but I could take him. :nut

People that only say FAIL and END OF THREAD are tools. It's a forum, meaning it's for discussion.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing. Now we know about Hearns' shaky chin, now we know about Hagler's iron chin and determination, now we know that Hearns' power wasn't quite enough, etc. You probably knew the result before you watched it. It's easy to think it was one-sided given those considerations.

I had Hearns winning the first round, and he nearly took Hagler's head off with that first right uppercut. And, regardless of who was ultimately making his mark, there were plenty of massive exchanges right up to the finish.

    Meh. I don't know how much stuff you've watched. Seen Basilio/Demarco I&II? Now that's two-way magic.

I think as a fight it does get a little bit overrated, it was still a 10/10 affair, rather than the 11/10 FOTC type.

Given that very few big fights/events live up to their billing *cough* DLH *cough* I'm reluctant to criticise these two for what they put on that night.

I'am proberbly just one of a lucky few on ESB that actually saw the fight live on satellite link up at 5.30am Tuesday morning at Portsmouth Guildhall, i'll never ever forget it as long as i live. Over 3,000 hungover drunks & packed in like sardines & you could'nt even here the commentary as it was just absolute bedlum with the screaming & we just could'nt believe our eyes as the fight rocked too & fro & as you pointed out it was just not expected for Hagler to run accross the ring & mug Hearns.

All the world waited on this fight:deal Hagler was P4P Superman & Hearns was viewed as the only man alive that had more than a 50/50 chance to rip the crown from Hagler's head but none of us could ever imagine how this fight started & ended. As you said there's more to a fight than just the fight & when the fight was called litually everyone + non boxing fans also just said ****IN GREAT:happy It was as natural as butter on toast, Duran takes Hagler 15 rounds & Hearns KO's Duran in 2 = Fight On:yep

Now these Mayweather loving bitches should go tell their pin-up girl too follow the example of yesteryear & fight a real opponant just as Hagler did in Hearns:D

Obviously the threadstarter was'nt born back around the Hagler/Hearns fight but even so he's shown an absolute ignorance with his regard too boxing history & what this fight was really all about:bbb

HAGLER silenced the doubters once & foreall & Ray Leonard slipped oh so quietly back down his hole & hid away as expected posponing another comeback on Health & Safty grounds:lol:

On a serious note, it is probably difficult for younger fans to appreciate this fight within its appropriate historical context. Others have already elaborated on that quite succinctly. I'll just ask you to multiply Pac/PBF X 5.

Thanks for the story, a lot of us weren't around to see it live. :good

I like Floyd, but you're right, he would have a much greater legacy if he took tougher fights. Match-making is a slippery slope of subjectivity.

I'm fighting back the urge to talk **** about SRL. I don't really want to open a can of worms though. The man deserves mad respect as a fighter. You baited me earlier with that in the Bias thread, I'm not going to go there!

Most points covered but the historic context was special
I listened to it live on the radio with my Dad at some ridiculous time in the morning
My dad called it just before the bell saying Hagler would win cos Hearns would try and knock him out
    I had Tommy outboxing him!!
Great fight even on the radio
Watched it so many times since and it still an awesome fight

Its been 20 years since that fight and a lot of what made it magic has been lost.

Although Hearns was dead tired, his punching powered was FEARED. He was being dominated yes, but we were still on edge knowing (thinking) that at any time he could put Hagler to sleep.

Just 10 months earlier he had DESTROYED a Duran who's chin was no less thought of than Haglers. That is what kept so many of us on the edge of our seats right until the end. Hagler was coming in reckless and free. Punches were just bouncing off his head. We were in awe, yet worried that he was making a fatal mistake. It was actually a Hagler we hadn't seen before, and certainly not the one we saw against Duran earlier. He was full bore and and in kill or be killed mode.

I think the fight is in it's rightful place.

    Abmirable self control guv'ner:lol:

Regarding Floyd, I've always been a fan of his boxing & it's a business after all, back in the day the Haglers needed the Hearns/Duran's & Leonards for the big $$$$ as this was all pre-HBO ppv as if you wanted to see the fights you had to find a closed circuit outlet so the marketing was really of total absolute importence if the fighters were to hit the $$$ jackpot.

But today these fighters came make more money in 1 fight than in a 80's fighter's whole career & more the case that it is proberby 2x 3x the case.

I just wish Floyd would stop acting the **** & fight Manny, cut out all this bull****, but it looks like pure & simple greed too me from the Mayweather clan & GBP, they can make $200MILLION+ in the future by not fighting Pac & risking all the marbles.

Already GBP are tying in with Hatton Promotions in the UK as a springboard in Mainland Europe to challenge Warren/Saurland & Palle, GBP/Mayweather have realised there's a massive revenue stream here waiting to be plundered & Pacquiao ai'nt part of the programme, he's the fly in the ointment & even Arum don't want the fight as he wants Manny to clean house. Different set of rules these days, everyone seems to duck everyone & **** the fans, it was the reverse 20 years ago.
