Cotto only fights for more legacy ATM. At 154, he really shouldn't be competing, the fact he is speaks a lot about Cotto the boxer.
Ricky Crapon is nowhere near Cotto. Crapon fought two greats and got humiliated. The other fighters on his list, the best of them are mainly decent or way past it.
When Collazo and Paulie are the best two prime fighters who you've beat on your resume... you don't really stand up to Cotto.

Cotto vs Williams, Cotto would UD over Williams, Paul has no defense, is sloppy, Cotto is more technical and skill and has improved footwork.

Cotto vs Martinez, 50/50 for both fighters.

Cotto vs Angulo, Cotto TKO in 6 rounds...Angulo is too raw.

Cotto vs Margarito, Cotto was winning the first 7 rounds until the plaster took a toll...Cotto defeats Margarito in TKO in 7 rounds, EASY.

Cotto vs Cintron, 50/50 for both fighters.

NO matter what happens to Cotto from now on, you cant erased what the man has done. Fought all the top 147pounders while Floyd was hidding. Had a great career at 140 also. And became a 154 champ fighting at the MOTHER****ER YANKEE STADIUM!!!
Hatton looked good at 140lbs, and was a nobody at 147lbs. Even Luis Collazo beat him and they took the fight away from him.
Even if Cotto never win again, you cant erased the great fights we have all witnessed.

Cotto lost two fight in which he took a lot of punishment. But was never knocked out like Hatton lwas against FLoyd and Manny. Cotto was defeated but never out cold like Ricky. That also says a lot about Cotto

I want him to fight berto... stiff competition, good fight, winnable fight.... thats fair..

some people in here talkinga bout put him in the ring with martinez? thats just feeding cotto to a hungry lion[/quote]

Well....Hatton fought the VERY best in Floyd and Manny and he did well with Floyd...better than Most thought and from Floyd's mouth....gave him his hardest fight ever. That says a lot. Yea... he got crushed by Manny in 2 but Cotto did as well. He just took a more thorough beating for 12 rounds.

Most who face the likes of Manny and Floyd are NOT gonna win...and in most cases either get completely schooled, smashed, dominated or all of the above.

I agree with most of your post. I think Manny and his team requested a Catch weight for one reason. Manny in my opinion is not a LEGIT WW. And felt Cotto was a very dangerous task. Given that Manny was the smaller guy and yes...he smashed DLH, but they knew Cotto would be a heavier challenge so instead of being at a huge disadvantage in weight they requested a Catch weight....Cotto requested 145 and they accepted.

I think they were testing the waters against top legit WW's before deciding to continue to fight there. After Cotto they were sure that they could compete at WW regardless of the size disadvantage Manny holds...he can take a WW's punch and the size, power and strenght isn't over shadowing the advantages Manny holds over MOST. Which is his talent, athletic ability and god given gifts.

If Cotto gets knocked out cold in 2 by those guys then yes i would expect people to start using this comparison more often.

My view is this, Hatton was a good figher who became very good with one legendary win, over Tyszu.
Other than that he faced Malignaggi, Urango, Collazo, Maussa. Hatton was totally outgunned in his 2 biggest tests, toyed with by Mayweather and brutalized by Pacquiao.
Hatton balooned in weight and seemed to be less focused than Cotto, hence why his spell at the top of the game has been shortened.

Cotto on the other hand was a top prospect, as HBO once said he was "pre-ordained" to become a very good boxer. He competed at a higher class than Hatton for a longer period, IMO.
His pinnacle was obviously beating Mosley, but his wins over Quintana, Judah and Clottey at welter, Malignaggi and Torres at light welter, and Foreman at light middle, give him a better resume than Hatton. This is without looking at Cotto's other wins at light welter, such as Maussa, Ndou, Corley and other dangerous fighters (Abdullaev, Pinto and Bailey).
Cotto's losses were more honourable then Hattons also, people forget that Cotto toyed with Margarito for most of their fight, and he did a much better job with Pacquiao than Hatton did.

When Hatton wasn't up to the job, he was found out obviously, when Coto was struggling, he still summoned it up to go 23 rounds with 2 of the biggest volume punchers and both were in their peak at the time.
Cotto always trained hard, never became a heavyweight in between training camps, and always acquitted himself well.

I was a big fan of Hatton but lost it a bit because its hard to think of someone who had so much being unable to control his drinking and eating habits for 2 or 3 years till he retired.

They are totally different fighters and IMO, Cotto has and will always be one level above Hatton.

While im here i'll throw my 2 cents in and say,
    Cotto beats Williams
    Cotto beats Margarito
    Cotto beats Cintron
    Cotto loses to Angulo
    Cotto loses to Martinez.

I have never regarded Cotto as overrated and crude as Hatton.

The boy actually has skills. He isn't done yet, in my opinion, just overmatched at 154. But at 147, he is a solid #3 on the totem poll. I think he's more the victim of cicrumstance. If Floyd had stayed retired, and Pac stayed at the lower weights, Cotto would be in a much better place.

why you getting so defensive... I ain't talking about cotto's past... I'm talking about his present & future

the point is he won't survive the top of 154... why sit cotto around and have him fight mid level fighters and just become a stepping stone.. its ******ed

so cotto beats williams except loses to angulo? wtf are you talking about... pick a side of the fence and stay there

    What are you talking about?

So Angulo and Williams are the same are they? You have just made yourself look like an even bigger idiot than the thread title ever could have done.

Angulo has a rock jaw, applies constant pressure through movement and has a bigger one punch than Williams. He would take Cotto's best and if he tagged Cotto it could be lights out.

Williams throws punches in bunches, his balance can sometimes be off, he can be caught cleanly as a result and wobbled or even put down (Martinez fight). If a technical boxer such as Cotto is in there with him, he can be outboxed.

Technically Angulo is better than Williams, thats my side of the ****ing fence. So yes, IMO Cotto beats Williams and loses to Angulo.

Nothing wrong with being consistent in your prediction.

My only question is... How do you account for the fact that Cotto is not a one-punch fighter, and he fades late? I think the combination of those two things makes it extremely difficult for him to deal with a 12-Round, non-stop punching machine who has been on the canvas only once in his entire career (and that was at 160).

Do you think Cotto has enough in the tank to win any of the last 5 Rounds against a guy with a good chin who will continue to throw 100 punches a round?

i don't think so. michael jackson needed surgery to become paler, so i think cotto does too. getting hit in the face will not turn his skin into a pastey white. he'd also have to grow out his hair a little bit in order to look like hatton as well.

Firstly, the points you make about Cotto are undeniably true.

With Steward in his corner, there is more emphasis on using balance and footwork to control the ring. Cotto would not get in a firefight with Williams immediately, the way he did with Pacquiao (through choice) and Margarito (through necessity). He would pace himself much more, and be more authoratative with the jab to help in that regard.

Williams is very tall, yes, and he throws ridiculous quanitites of punches down the stretch, yes again.

However, this is why i see Cotto taking the fight:

Bodywork: PWill's body would be open for someone with the short height of Cotto to target. Cotto couldn't show his famed bodypunching against Foreman, because Foreman was constantly moving on the back foot. Williams would engage and come to Cotto, and his body would be the most obvious and in my opinion hurtfull target area. If Cotto tartgetted the body the way we know he can, this might take some wind out of Williams, at least soften him up a bit for later.

Also, Height: Williams is 6'1, Cotto 5'7. In almost all cases this is seen as a disadvantage for Cotto. But we have seen time and again Williams being tagged by smaller fighters(Quintana, Cintron, Martinez). This is because he has to face downward, Williams does not use his height by sticking and moving, he prefers to go forwards, so he is easily hittable even for those with a height disadavantage. Cotto is so much smaller, Williams would be crouching and with his average head movement and balance, Cotto would find him and land on him. Williams has a good chin, but Cotto would find it over and over again, without even really having to move as Williams would be happy to come to him.

Adding to that, Cotto also showed on a few occasions against Foreman that he was fine covering up and using an Abraham-esque style of defense to absorb punches. This for me is a massive plus because Cotto has always parried punches when under assault and against volume punchers this has been a big weakness.

Anyway, bit of an essay, but i think Cotto would jab early, work the body rounds 3-6, and start to tag Williams as it opened up down the stretch. Cotto wouldn't even tire late as per because i think he takes Williams out before the final bell anyway!

    Cotto TKO10 Williams
