ignore criticsm of resume, where does rjj rank atg.

going purely off skill here. never mind who he did fight, or didnt fight. purely off his skill and abilty, where do ya rate rjj ATG P4P?

the guy was as close to unbeatable as it gets

Jones was not unbeatable, even at his best. His major flaw was the lack of a solid chin. If you're comparing Roy against the all time greats P4P , having such a major flaw would be exploited, especially over 15 rounds.

 

Head to head and talent he is top 3 for me...

Based on resume and talent (over all greatness) I would say he is top 30

plain and simple he was arguably the most athletically gifted fighter ever.

 

I'm not sure you can compare skills if not proven against suitable opposition. Jones' resume isn't stellar once he got to 175. From 154 - 168 he fought decent opponents and at 175, some good guys and some bums.

But he never faced the best guys around for whatever reason, so it's hard to really assess him. He didn't get tested often and, when he did, he got flattened by Tarver.

 

the chin is my major concern.

on one hand in his prime noone landed a punch on him, bar the 1 kd. by time he had weight jumped and gone back down his punch resistance was ot what it was.

in his prime no-one knows how good his chin was.

and for thos who thinks a solid chin cant be cracked, check out the career of mayorga, especially vs forrest and tito and de la hoya

 

How can you ignore criticism of his resume? Its the number one factor in rating people in ATG status.

 

i maintain that, bizarrely, if jones struggled with his opponents they'd look better and as a result, his legacy would improve. i refuse to punish him because he consistently and routinely completely dominated top 10 opposition. he made good fighters look like children and i can't say he wouldn't be great fighters as a result

 

i agree mate, i had a thread a few days back asking what the impact of a victory over dariusz michaelowski would have had.

i think that one name would solidify his resume

im saying, if you where to rank boxers purely on skill, where would you place rjj

 

totally.

the 1 fight he had to dig deep was tarver 1. had he retired at that point, wow people would class him as ATG. no doubts over his chin, no nothing.
