Well hes now very far past his best but how good was Ronald Winky Wright in his prime ? was he really that Dodged And what happened him signing with Top Rank ? i thought he was being lined up to fight Kelly ?
he signed with top rank and yes he was the **** in his prime one of my all time faves , got robbed against taylor and vargas
Prime Bronco Mckart X 3 Shane Mosely X 2 Trinidad Taylor Vargas Vasquez and on and on. 15 world title fights. Winky won some and he lost some, but back in the day Winky was the ****, and those who say otherwise should have their eyes poked out so they can never watch another boxing match.
i've wondered this question myself. his main 3 attributes where his jab, size and heart. plus his high guard stopped him shipping too many punches. the domination of tito was class. vargas fight could've gone either way, same as taylor. he werent exciting, fearsome of even slick. but he got the job done. says it all that he was the fave for the hopkins fight
winky was my favorite fighter when he was still an active boxer. I loved his fights with mosley, trinidad, taylor, vargas etc. Hell of a fighter, hell of a jab. Ive never heard so many ooo's and ahhhhh's from the crowd in response to jabs than i did in his trinidad fight. Still think he should have got the decision vs taylor and he should have taken the rematch which i think he would have won and would have changed the entire course of his career.
yeah, ****ed up MAJOR by turning down the rematch with Taylor. I thought he won the fight but it was not a robbery. A "robbery" is very clear, like Lewis/Holyfield, Oscar/Sturm, Byrd/Oquendo, etc. One could argue Taylor won 6 rounds, and the fight was ruled a DRAW, not a Taylor victory. Winky should have got back in the ring instead of crying.
Not sure about the Top Rank deal, but Wink was a fantastic fighter in his prime. He'd be a threat to anyone at 154lbs.
The Taylor fight could have gone either way. Winky took the final round off when he had Taylor's eye busted to pieces. That's on him. Not taking the rematch is also on him. That said, Winky was a top flight fighter with a difficult style to overcome at his best.
In close fights, Winky would take the late rounds off then cry about the decision. See Vargas. See Hopkins. See Taylor. Great fighters turn up the heat in the late rounds of close fights. Winky didn't. He was very good, but most of his "robberies" were nothing of the sort.
i used to think he was robbed in the vargas fight but after rewatching a while back, it was close but def a victory for vargas, mainly due to exactly what you mention, him kinda coasting the championship rounds. Same with the taylor fight. Used to cry robbery but it was very very close. I think the last time i saw it, i gave it to winky by a point or two, but there were many close rounds so a draw was fine. He shouldnt have pulled a baby move and left the ring after the annoucement either.
Winky was a very good fighter who frustrated his opponents and had a impenetrable defense which made him very difficult to beat Oscar knew this, thats why i believe he ducked him and stay cleared And Oscar was one to never back down from anyone,so that tells u a lot
Winky was one of the few fighters who modified their style significantly and went from a decent fighter into a great one. At his peak he knew how to fight to his advantages and there would be very few fighters in the history of the 154 division that could beat him. He was a very solid, consistent performer who took few risks in the ring and usually won comfortably although not spectacularly.
Yeah I agree. I think it was clear that Winky would have battered Oscar. It would have been like Hoya/Sturm but more decisive.
- Winky was the fighter that got me interested in the technical side of boxing. - I think it was either one of the Mosely fights/the Trinidad mismatch - I thought WOW. - Those 3 fights are probably my favourite fights.
