Prime Hopkins and Jones both had the option but turned it down. High risk low reward.

Can anybody answer me this? Has anyone ever seen a world champion call out the LOSER of a fight the way Joe called out RJJ right after the Tarver defeat?

They didnt want to fight him when they undefeated because high risk/low reward so maybe he thought they might accept after they had lost? (jones anyway)

    Do you really believe that?

Regardless they both had losses before that point anyway. What was there to protect?

JC was relatively unknown prior to the Lacy fight. Why would he even register on their radar? Up until then he was basically a regional fighter.

Why should Calzaghe have to go over to the States?

Calzaghe didnt expect them to go to the UK, Cazlaghe said he was willing to go to America

What American SMWs that were willing to meet Calzaghe, did Calzaghe avoid? He beat Brewer (who Hopkins knew well), Mitchell, Sheika, Manfredo and Lacy. Calzaghe was champ why should he have to travel for those guys? But like said Calzaghe was willing to travel to meet Jones and Hopkins

A hype job that was favourite to win, and Lacy beat a faded Reid very convincingly

If Hopkins wouldnt fight Joe in America, why go over there and fight an unknown fighter? Hopkins wouldnt fight.
Fighters with no credibility? That shows a bit of ignorance and the belief that if fighters arent known to America that they dont have credibility... How silly. But please tell me why Eubank, Reid, Woodhall, Starie, Veit, Mkertchyan, Kessler, Brewer, Lacy, Mitchell, etc Have no credibility

Hopkins wouldnt take the fight back then. I repeat Hopkins wouldnt take the fight back then.
But still Hopkins was Ring LHW champ who in his fight before beat Wright and in huis fight after beat Pavlik. Who when Calzaghe went up to LHW was he meant to fight???????? He fought the Ring LHW champ, the best the division offered, so how if Hopkins was champ can he have been so past it?

What calibre???? Who in the SMW division (the division Calzaghe fought in) did Calzaghe not fight that was willing to fight him?? So how can he be critisied.
But if the statement you make is so true how come P Williams and Dawson are so hyped? How come Lacy was so hyped, How come Hopkins for fighting so many smaller fighters was hyped?

Once again Hopkins wouldnt fight, he wasnt on Jones plans, so please who are all these other great elites and what elites in America are you referring to??? Calzaghe beat Americas best SMWs.
All long reigning champs have mediocres but he still beat the others around that would face him and must have beaten someone in order to win WBO 21 defences, WBC WBA IBF & RING SMW & LHW TITLES.

Go to the States and fight who? and why? Calzaghe was champ, the man of the division.

    [/quote]

So you have all these great elites who can beat Calzaghe and none of them did :huh
While I agree you have some good fighters, lets not get taken in and swept away by The Ring and TV now. Look at Moselys win resume and its not as good as it first appears, he has a win over Holiday, a great win over De La Hoya and then a win over Margarito whos career now has a cloud over it. Its not better than Calzaghes when you look at it. Dawson knocked down many times by far lesser fighters on more than one occassion and has a good win over LHW Adamek but looks lucky not to get KOd by Johnson whos got how many losses and is a lesser fighter than alot of Calzaghe victims. P Williams who may do well but hasnt done anything beyond what Calzaghe did and has a lesser resume, but because these fighters are based in America and recognised they are given credit and in The Rings P4P ratings yet a guy like Haye who has won WBA WBC WBO Ring CW titles and is now WBA HW champ isnt in the P4P ratings by the Ring. Says something, he even won most of those titles away

Tarver seemed happy to, along with other world rated fighters in Johnson and Hopkins

It does all seem a bit unfair, im not a big fan (prefer Froch) but the double standards on here are amazing. Just take a look at Ward to see how an American is treated for only fighting at home. We told if calzaghe had come to USA earlier and risked his belt their he would have gottten big respec like Froch has...... Even if he had eventually lost he would still have gained more respect, cant imagine ppl saying you was overhyped after losing to p4p1 and 2 like hatton..oh wait. If he had gone to america people wouldnt start blasting him if every fight wasnt vs top contender, just look at Khan.. oh wait.

Also to balance that lets see Ward stays at home like Calzaghe and classed as future ATG/HOF
Dawson fights way older past it fighters like Calzaghe did and is very high on ppls top 10 p4p lists
Paul williams can have a worse resume yet be classed as p4p top 10 with no complaints

But no one is trying to paintany of these guys as ATGs.

They're young. Their career paths are as of yet unwritten.

Im not saying Calzaghe an ATG, I think he was extremely skilled but due to various circumstances he never breached the final barrier. The problem is many on here class him as a merely good but not great fighter and do everything possible to drago his name down.

They forced him to fight in his backyard against the worst fighters they could get the WBO to sanction for 10 years? He had no say whatsoever in his career for ten years?

There is no "staying at home in the US". Even in Cali its impossible to fix fights like in the UK and Germany. If American titlist fought the parade of bums guys like Sturm and Slappy joe did they would be broke and laughed out of their own gym. Williams and Ward are still active and Williams already has a better resume as Joe in less fights.
