Vaca was an unusual fighter capable of wildly varying performances. Much like fellow power puncher Pipino Cuevas he was brought up hard, matched up against difficult opposition early with little to no amateur career, and really came into his own after a rocky start to his career. Now I know many if not most of the posters of general feel this is a very "meh" era of welterweights, with a few exceptions Miguel Cotto, Antonio Margarito, Joshua Clottey, Paul Williams, Kermit Cintron... Fighters with huge defensive issues, lacking one or more intangible skill, a few failing at the very highest level. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Now how does a C+ or thereabouts level guy in Vaca do against these fighters? Vaca was a fighter who pulled off some pretty decent wins, despite running very hot and cold. A very old Pipino Cuevas, Mark Breland, a SD loss against Terry Norris, an old Saoul Mamby, a TD win against a undefeated Lloyd Honeyghan, so on and so forth. So, thoughts? Was a so so fighter in a stronger era of WW's better then the so so (In most peoples opinions) welterweights of today?
I expect he would lose to all except perhaps Cintron, but quite possibly give a number of them a decent enough fight, if you take him circa Honeyghan bouts. I'd say it's the likes of McCrory, Jones etc that would be able to beat a lot of the more high profile fighters of this welter era, while being generally considered the second tier in thier own, if you are taking 80s fighters into consideration.Vaca was a few notches below them. quite a few 70s Welters i'd pick over the more recent guys as well.ernie Lopez, Clyde Gray etc...were genuinely very good to excellent at their best.
Do you think his power could bail him out against fighters like Williams/Magarito, who were very easy to hit? Or did Vaca simply not hit quite that hard?
:nono No way does hit hard enough to dent ko Margarito, it takes a speed demon with power to do that to Margarito, someone who outclasses him in the speed department along with having firepower, Vaca had good Power(Not great) but he was probably slower than Margo, i cant see him outbrawling Margo here. Id give him an even money chance to ko Cintron, or Berto. I cant see Vaca beating Williams, although Williams does to have a lot of lapses in his Defense. IMO Williams has showed a good chin though (so far).
Vaca stunk......... He was more lucky than really good.......... He beat Honeyghan on some type of technical cut, and Breland was shot by the time Vaca KO'd his ass........ Vaca was average at best........ MR.BILL
Vaca's main talent was an ability to win on technical decisions...other than that, he wasn't very much, and would have been cannon fodder for a guy like Cotto.
he loses to Marg and Williams, but beats Cintron, Clottey and maybe Cotto (if we are talking about today's version)
