Round 10 Iribe is walking Calderon down but advancing with his hands down and not throwing. It seems that in the deeper waters Jesus has enough energy to EITHER keep up with Ivan or keep his hands moving constantly - not to do both simultaneously as he did in the early rounds. Calderon is feeling confident enough to pop the 1-2 as he turns Iribe, and even fall in with upward hooks to the bottom of Iribe's jawline. Iribe launches a masssive right hand in answer but Calderon simply squats under it and runs right by Iribe - telling the tale of the fight in these last few rounds. After the bell to end the round Calderon does a little strut around the center of the ring.
Round 11 Calderon's right jab pouring like a waterfall. Iribe is discouraged by his inability to catch Calderon high, so he is rowing his oars at Calderon's midsection but unable to consistently feel him. Calderon seems to actually be getting faster on his feet the deeper it goes, very strange.
Round 12 Iribe going balls to the wall, swinging hard with both hands in succession, his body angling side to side with his momentum. Calderon is flitting backwards and leaving a jab in his trail, but not worrying about trying to land it so much as get out of the way. Calderon continues to move and Iribe's desperate attempts to land fall short. Calderon showboats a bit, pumping his arms over his head for the crowd. Iribe drops his guard altogether and rushes in toward Calderon, firing a wide variety of right hand punches: straights, overhands, uppercuts, ones that don't even have names. Calderon is able to dodge or partially block them all.
Yeah, in most of the first half Iribe was landing body shots and Calderon was missing jabs. Even if you're a big fan of Calderon and/or not a fan of body-punching or pressure styles in general, you can't just refuse to score body shots, particularly when they're the only thing either is being touched with. I'll give it to Ivan, though - he survived some hard thumping on his torso and more than a few scary moments, and came back to actually dominate the second half with his slick boxing and fast, fancy footwork.
Somebody should invent a better word to describe Calderon, ultraboring extraboring superboring re-ultra-extra-super-boring
118-109 for Calderon is silly but not unexpected. 116-111 is more reasonable. I had Iribe on a straight tear from 2 through 5, which makes it 8 rounds to 4 for Calderon, or 115-112 accounting for the extra point for the knockdown.
