If that's the case then he should have fought him when he had the chances. Calzaghe didn't want tough fights and if you read the posts by Clinton you would see that Joe said so himself. It should seem kind of strange that everybody else could get fights except for Calzaghe.
IT IS THE CASE.Glen Johnson could not and would not have beaten Joe Calzaghe. Stevie Wonder could see that.
Ray Charles could see that by you ignoring the rest of my post and the quotes that Clinton posted you're saying that you know the truth is not on your side. The fact that Calzaghe refused to fight Johnson on multiple occasions tells me he wasn't as confident in your assumption as you are.
I think it's odd as well. I don't like Calzaghe, but I respect the win against Hopkins and I also respect his win against Kessler. The only fight I have any issue with after he became far better known across the pond post-Lacy is the Roy Jones Jr. fight. And it's not neccessarily that he took the fight. It's simply that some of his fans consider that a particularly good win and it probably isn't in his top 5 wins. Roy was shot to pieces, Calzaghe knew that, and nothing in Roy's mini 3 fight win streak prior could have changed Calzaghe's mind like he claimed. Like I said, not really his fault, he was cashing out against a legend, but it needs to be understood for what it is. Back to Hopkins. The problem with the light heavyweight division is that it's been old guard for a while now. Tarver's been old. Roy's been old and shot to pieces. Hopkins has been old for a while. Glen Johnson's been old. Dawson was young and really promising but he didn't have a big name at the time (and still can't sell out a hard rock cafe, though I'm a huge fan) and at Calzaghe's age he had a short amount of time and could only take on "name fights" which means all the past-prime light heavyweights. Perhaps some have a bitter taste in their mouth that Joe chose to fight Roy and retire without ever fighting Johnson who he canceled a few fights with if I'm not mistaken. I also read a theory on here once that Calzaghe may've been trying to use the Roy fight as a setup fight for Pavlik but Pavlik got stomped down by Hopkins (I've never really looked into it, so it could be way off base). Granted if he wiped out a young Pavlik it would be considered in the same light as Lacy (which is somewhat ironic that Hopkins doesn't get the same flak). On to Dawson. Dawson has the ultimate problem that Calzaghe had except worse...he's actually young and about to prime(if he's not prime already) and has been criticized ad nauseum for fighting old guys and wanting to fight old guys (Hopkins, he wants to retire him). Fortunately for him, if Cloud is able to get by Johnson there may finally be a changing of the guard in the LHW division. A young triumvriate of Dawson, Pascal, and Cloud sitting atop the LHW division. So there's quality matches to be made between the 3. Also, perhaps after Dawson fights Pascal and perhaps Cloud, maybe a showdown with Bute. As another poster said, I think the difference is Dawson is young and has time to put the resume together and could have a big opportunity if Cloud gets by Johnson.
1. Well Dawson actually won ion my view, I don't think Calzaghe won, Dawson did the honourable thing and rematched a close fight, Calzaghe avoided the rematch, just as he did with Robin Reid, who some thought beat him in 99 2. He was the number 1 LHW after Calzaghe, thats not up for debate, he beat Adamek who many ranked as no1. Yes Dawson called Calzaghe out at 175 after BHOPs, Calzaghe chased the money in 3. Dawson was a hungry fighter who'd fight anyone at 168-175, Calzaghe was fighting only for the big money low risk fights, that much is obvious to anyone but a nutthugger 4. Fighters who wanted Calzaghe when he was doing **** All - Froch, Robin Reid rematch, Mundine, Danny Green, Vanderpool, Echols (who ko'd Brewer in 2 - Calzaghe fought Brewer instead), Glen Johnson, Branco, Larson, Markuson......Otke talked about unification but Calzaghe didn't call him out until Reid knocked him all over the ring. Beyer was a legit target but wasn't chasing Joe. So basically Calzaghe avoided top10 fighters like the plague for most of his WBO run 5. Sheika was a bum, Johnson was a world class LHW who would beat Jones and Tarver and many thought was robbed against Otke 6. Don't watch much boxing do you? Johnson was robbed against Sheika. Feeling embarrased yet? 7. Because he was faking injury? His dad was annoyed he pulled out 8. You don't follow boxing much do you, his own dad thought he was pussying out 9. Umm again you don't follow boxing do you, after Calzaghe pussyed out on their fight Johnson beat Jones, and then Tarver to become no1 LHW in the world. The Woods loss was years after the proposed Calzaghe fight and it was a robbery - if you actually watch boxing, which you clearly do not Feeling like a ****** who makes **** up yet? Thats all you are :hey I don't even pick Johnson to beat Calzaghe, calzaghe was scared of losing his zero though. All the same you're a fraudulant poster who knows nothing of the sport
An injury caused one withdrawal and another withdrawal was due to problems with his estranged wife. Ending up in a Newbridge police cell hardly indicates being focused on a world title fight. Nothing to do with believing Johnson could beat him.
[/quote] Ill answer you both at the same time here, because once again you have both shown a lack of knowledge on the subject. Im not going to go in full on these answers because they are answered on various other answers but in short. Point 4 to start. Echoles pulled out of fighting Calzaghe, Frank Warren stated this, and do you think Echoles would have won? When Calzaghe was ringside with a view to facing Johnson, Johnson lost, he got beat by Woods and blew his chances of a fight with Calzaghe. Sheika was such a bum that off the top of my head I know he got 2 more title chances, and beat Johnson. Sheika was a good enough defence for the mini Tyson. The fresher Johnson, who lost to Tarver who Hopkins soundly beat, keep convincing yourselves, and still Dawson was 14 years younger not 7, Joe was hardly a spring chicken himself 2003 was after he agreed to go to America, so maybe he was losing patience with the outcome in 2002. You have to remember Woods was sidelined for a year with injury, but im sure you are well aware of that and Calzaghe wanted to clear up his own division first, which he did. If Calzaghe had of gone up and fought Woods, he probably wouldnt have fought at SMW again and would never have won all the SMW titles, which gave him the platform to get the fight with Hopkins, that Hopkins avoided for so long. In brief
still makes me laugh every time a muppett questions calzaghe for pulling out of the johnson fight. johnson is a B/C level fighter. glen johnson has lost 13 times for ffs. if calzaghe had beat johnson he would just be considered as another bum on calzaghe's resume. the things that people cling too on here to try and discredit another fighter is laughable :rofl
Yes, everyone knows the SMW division was a European belt and all the fighter Joe Calslappy beat made their names in that region. He won (lost in my mind) to Bhop and did not give him a rematch. That is by far his biggest win and he did not do the right thing and give a rematch. Instead he fought RJJ who was on his way to the glue factory. RJJ gets a lot a slack for competition but he went back and fought Tarver who knocked his ass out . . . was Joe afraid of the same thing? BTW if you want to here fans singing the praises of Joe calcracky keep it on the Euro board where all can have a love feast. Most real boxing fans are tired of hearing about him and his crappy legacy . . . Why do his fans constantly argue about how great he is? Don't you guys realize no one is listening and nobody cares? Do not go away mad, just go away!
As far as entertainment goes... Dawson's fights with Johnson & Tarver>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Hopkins/Calzaghe Hopkins was past it and that fight could've been a draw. I feel sorry for those judges scoring that fight it was a bit tough to score and a shite fight(And I'm a fan of Dawson & Hopkins lol)
