I am very critical of the UFC but all in all Goldberg and Rogan are a pretty good team. It could be a whole lot worse. Remember when Jeff Blatnick aned even Jim Brown did commentary. Even when considering current commentators there is plenty of drek out there. Frank Shamrock and Gus Johnson come to mind.
Shamrock is fine. I find Gus Johnson annoying and not much different to Goldberg. He just rambles and meanders on without really knowing much about what he's taking about. As for Brown and Blatnick that shite was pityful. Admitededly that was in the early days of the UFC. Who's idea was it to have a running back as the colour commentator anyway? I dont think Brown said anything of any value at all when he commentated.
TEEP! Whats worse than that is when he calls out "3, 2" after punches without explaining it, like the normal non hardcore fan is going to know that means left hook right hand. He usually gets them wrong anyway. That being said, he is one of the best of a very bad bunch. Lon McEachern would be my ideal choice of guys who have done MMA before (did Pride 33); he has also done some kickboxing, and does ESPN's Poker. Also, if Mark Aplin (Cage Rage ring announcer) didn't tragically die of a heart attack, I would have had him introduce every sporting event ever. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H9AXedA-I8c[/ame]
Darke knows bugger all about MMA. And he tended to really tow the company line on SKY. Frankly i found him and his parrot (Glenn McCrory) rather irritating. Steven Holdsworth would probably do a better job as he was the colour commentator on Eurosport and did a fair few K1 and MMA bouts. Then again Micheal Schiavello may be worse. I cannot stand him. He spoils every single DREAM event with his constant excitable screaching. The guy does my absolute head in.
I just love his voice, I don't really get to hear him call fights often, and know nothing other than his voice. Alot of good stuff from him in here [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CW0TwWASHlI[/ame] Shiavello should be raped to death for his crimes against the spoken word.
I kind of like Mauro as long as he doesn't talk more than once or twice a fight. I enjoy the occasional groan inducing, pre planned pun or simile, plus it shows he does at least put some work into it. He should be used in very very very small quantities. At least he doesn't think he is brilliant like Quadros, who is a ****.
Goldberg is the announcer, Rogan is the color commentator. Goldberg has Lampleys role, Rogan is Merchant. Randy was great as 2nd color commentator. Then he left the UFC. They should have brought him back as soon as he re-signed.
I also liked Randy. I am in the minority, but I like Frank Mir. I like Frank Trigg. I am neutral or slightly dislike Florian, neutral or slightly positive on Pulver.
I also kind of like Rogan. He would be great as the third commentator. His goofy enthusiam is ok in small doses. And he has decent knowledge, at least about jiu jitsu. I'd prefer to see someone more serious though - Randy or Mir would be great. Preferably Randy; Mir is still young and will be around for years, better to have someone who probably won't be fighting a lot of the guys he's commentating on.
