Hauser always writes lenghty erudite articles...but reading through it is a breeze and a joy, a mark of a great writer.
The worst revelation in the article is the total cover up by Lathan and Petrillo for Mercante Junior. Two people who truly do not belong there by any standards. Any other Commissioner would have gotten rid of Mercante Junior long ago. Do they actually believe people don't know what he did, how he did it and why? All he cared about was being on TV longer and personally being part of a better hi lite reel for his own personal gain. The use of him, or the referee on the under card "Sparkle Lee" turned the whole card into a nightmare of incompetence, appointed by incompetence. defended with incompetence and if Melvina Lathan and Ralph Petrillo who are friends with Mercante Junior for many years think the public isn't wretching at this farce of a cover up they are wrong. The NY Gov is on the way out and so are they for explanations and appointments like this.
Won't get many people on this forum to read it. Two things stood out: Shame on anyone who thought that seeing a one-legged fighter get beaten up was entertainment. AND A wise man once said, The last thing you do is ask a fighter who might be hurt if he wants to continue. Because if hes any kind of fighter at all, hell say yes. That man was Arthur Mercante Sr. Very nice way to wrap that article up. :yep
Article is spot on, but doubt it'll change many minds. Lot of bloodthirsty fans who want to see a brutal beating and KO rather than a fighter saved from unnecessary punishment.
everyone always wants to talk about old school.....all the ref did was give the guy a ****ing chance to go out on his shield....he had never lost, never been ko'd.....cotto isnt some murderous hitter...... people on here are such giant pussies these days....go watch world cup soccer if you want to be bored and see no risk to injury
You know this article convinced me, I was a bit on the fence. He didn't take the proper procedures to consult the ring doctor or evaluate the position of the corner. What Roach and Steward say make a lot of sense. If he was injured beyond the ability to fight, there's no reason to let the fighter continue risking himself. Period.
Excellent article..... And I can't remember the last time I heard these words strung together, "Yoni is beyond compare when it comes to sounding the shofar"
