Here is basically his life story:

In and out of jail for assualt and robbery - Escapes jail - Joins Army - Gets kicked out of Army - KO's blown up welterweight in Griffin - Gets schooled by Middlweight Champ Joey Giardello - losses 7 of next 15 fights - Kills a bunch of people - Released from jail on a technicality.

Filll in the holes where neccessary....

If he hit you, you'd tell your grandchildren about the pain, CLOSE THREAD

BTW there is a case for him beating Giardello, I had him up after 9rounds when scoring it, then lost my card, so havent finnished scoring it

Hurricane's a weepy, sentimental load of tripe, that got the filmakers sued by Giardello for how they presented the fight. Carter was a decent contender in his day, but lost to the best he faced.

It's hard to say whether he committed the crime he was imprisoned for, but there was some seriously underhand behaviour going on during the 'investigation'.

He has a lot of hype because of the song and the movie. I never found him so great on film.

Carter is not generally held in high esteem. Most people realize he was never more than a good contender, and was probably one loss from gatekeeper status when he went to prison.

The movie and song were great, and he was wrongfully thrown in prison for a long time so he sort gets a sympathy bonus for that.

they did find the caliber of bullets used in the murder in his car. i'd say he got off on a technicality. the movie omits his criminal history and a lot of the facts of the case

Rubin Carter, was wrongfully convicted cause of prejudice agaist him by the court system in the 60's. We all know its holes and prejudice in the court system especially in his case. He was released in 1976 but to everybody surprise got a raw deal by the same justice system that had incarcerate him for 10 years, even Muhammad Ali stood up for his cause. Carter, was the number # 1 middleweight contender at the time of his arrest.
