I'd like to hear who was bigger and better than Lewis/Wlad in the 10's/20's. They must have locked him up in a cage because I certainly haven't seen someone that size with skills.
I would like to hear about these mystical giants as well.. The only man who exceded 6'5", and weighed over 230 that won a title back then was Jess Willard, and frankly if he has anything in common with Lewis, Bowe, Wlad or Vitali, then I really must have missed it..
The irony there is that Jack Johnson had come under similar criticism from Larry Folley, for not putting his weight on the front foot. What goes around comes around.
I think that if you combined some of the best characteristics of Jess Willard and Fred fulton, then you would essentialy end up with a fighter equal to Lennox Lewis. Now I am going to take some hits for this, but I really don't think that Jess Willard was a lot worse than Vitally Klitschko technicaly.
Willard was in-shape for Johnson down in Cuba at 230 pounds, but looked slobbish and flabby for Dempsey at 245 pounds later in '19 out in Ohio...... MR.BILL
How much footage of Willard and Fulton have you reviewed to make this assessment? If I read the ramblings of an old track coach going to extremes about how Charlie Paddock was the fastest human in universe and that none would ever surpass him... would I pick Paddock over Usain Bolt in a mythical match-up? How much credence to such statements carry?
That would be one possible combination. Lets say we take a fighter of Willards physique and give him Fred Fultons jab, boxing ability and handspeed. We keep Fultons chin just to make it fair. I think then you would have something a bit like Wlad.
Yes I am. How is it insufficient evidence when a newspaper writes about how Johnson toyed with his opponents, hitting them when he pleased, and telling them where he was going to hit them, which hand, and which punch he was going to use. Or the way he enjoyed to slowly picked away at his opponents like an artist. He comes in, throws three perfectly accurate punches and while the opponent is too stunned to get in the proper defensive position, Johnson backs away, and studies the art he just made. he would do all of this to reputable opponents. All the footage that exists of him, verify these stories. However they are not showcasing him using these talents at his best. Like I said, it's like trying to explain someone how Ali fought pre exile, if all you had was post exile footage. This is not even mentioning how bad the conditions in which he lived in were during these fights. If no footage of him existed, would you believe that he carried his opponents from falling while simultaneously talking and smiling? Doubt it Would you believe the stories about how he would have full conversations with ringside members during fights? You would probably think that was over exaggerated as well. Lewis defeats Klit (great win) and everyone praises him, fair. Johnson comes back from a 6 year lay off from boxing, goes from being fat, to fit again. Fights 26 rounds, and wins at least 20 of them. And everyone uses this fight to prove why Johnson wasn't great?
If Johnson's main mission was to knockout his opponents as fast as he could, his record would be a LOT different
If every boxer were afforded as many caveats as Johnson, the Hall of Fame would number in the thousands. I suppose he was pecking away and torturing Choynski, Hart, O'Brien, Ketchell, Jim Johnson... etc. Oh, no, there is a litany of apologetic footnotes to each fight. Don't mind repeating them. I've heard them all. The preponderance of excuses speaks volumes.
yea fair enough, but what about the post right before the one you quoted that was primarly relevant to our argument?
