Having Heart is overrated, and is a liability in fighters today.

A lot of times a question the point of a fighter having heart, I don't believe it's a skill, bit I do believe fighter need it in small doses, like say for example Zab Judah. To be honest I would rather have discipline rather than heart, and good example would be Mayweather taking his time to break down hatton who like to hold then hit, or Mayweather vs Gatti where he beating him down while still respecting his power.

When I think of heart being a liability the first thing that comes to mind is Spanish fighters who break their gameplan to show they get heart, and turn what could be a easy fight into a hard one.

In the David Diaz vs Maquez fight I was dissapointed in Marquez taking punches he didn't have to take to prove sometime he needed not to, because of it he got rocked, but lucky for him Diaz who has HEART was also being a dumb ass. When Diaz got hert he could of easily grabed Marquez, but no, what did he choose to do keep swining until he got dropped. He got up and kept swinging like a dumbasses

Imagine if Floyd started swinging crazy at mosely instead of holding on tight that would of been one hell of a night. I can help but wonder if that was Pac that night who got rocked I think he would of kept swinging because of his HEART and he would of went to sleep that night.

Long Story short this is chess not checkers, what do you guys think o the matter?

    Sorry for errors iPhone

Interesting points of guys who can box but are caught in the bravado and get KO'd

Billy Conn vs Joe Louis comes to mind

Just like anything in life, you need balance.

The same can be said about a slugger who decides to box in the biggest fight of his life and loses lop sided on cards

like if floyd fought say margo and margo decided to be this text book boxer hed bet his ass boxed off

when hed have a great chance if he fought as the pressure fighter

I don't know if your confusing heart with reckless aggression. I think of having heart as someone who is solidly behind on the scorecards, but works his way back into the fight by not being gun shy, but still working hard to not get hit with a big punch. I think a perfect example of this is the way Abner Mares worked his way back into the fight against Yohnny Perez. If he was recklessly aggressive, he would have just gone into one of the middle rounds knowing he was behind on the scorecards and started swinging away, looking for the big one. As Teddy would say, the big "Bang, Bang!" However, he fought a smart fight, winning most if not all of the final rounds and working his way to a draw, but in my opinion, a win. I think heart is invaluable: being able to recognize when the time to step up is without getting reckless. I really don't like the Mayweather example because that only happened two rounds in, so there was no need to force anything.

Heart without skill is indeed a liability. Skill with heart defines ATG.

Good post. What's heart going to do for you when you're getting frustrated to death?

    Duran-Leonard 2, No mas!
    Whitaker-Chavez
    Mayweather-Marquez
    Mayweather-Mosley

Most boxing fans will say Marquez and Mosley have moar "heart" than Floyd.

Heart becomes moar important in slugfests or brawling affairs where both guys are taking a **** load of damage. There has to be a mutual reception and cooperation in styles for heart to really weigh in.

A good defense fighter will take away his opponent's offense which makes his enemy like a soldier without an AZZault rifle. He can still have the will to continue fighting, but he going to battle unarmed is a good way to die. There's always surrendering or what boxing fans call "not trying".

In other words you love boring ass fighters who dont take risks, who dont challenge themselves, and who pretty much win fights by moving around the ring punching every other minute right?

Fighters having Heart is what has given us the most exciting fights throughout boxing history. So I disagree with you completely.

You mention JMM and Diaz fighting dumb because they fought with heart and yet that is what made that fight, Fight of the Year.

And NO this is NOT chess nor checkers, this is the fight game.
You can either box or brawl but you have to show some heart in there.

If Mayweather would have showed some heart against JMM, he might have Knocked him out.

What happens when a fight can no longer be decided on skills alone? What's happens to the guy with no heart?

Heart's vital, but as another poster said, it's all about balance. Heart can cross the line into stupidity pretty easily because of just how much pride some guys have, and in those instances, it's up to the corner to prevent possible long-term damage because he's got too much heart, not enough skills or physical ability, and takes a prolonged beating.

A recent example of this would be that inexperienced Guerrero dude who Darchynian fought a couple fights back; he showed a ton of heart (and a hell of a chin), but took an unreal amount of punishment in the process.

What's the point of wasting energy and putting in heart when it's not needed? To keep guys like you happy?

There are times when having heart is the best thing in the world. Round 2 of Mayweather-Mosley for example. If he had no heart there he would have just let himself get stopped, so he can go home early.
