but people would have accused him of fighting a drained mosley if he choses to fight him at 140 which mosley offered. fighting cotto is as good as it get. besides during that time, many of his fans wants cotto more since he is younger and people will criticize pac for fighting an aging fighter even if he is ranked high. there a couple of reasons here why pac-cotto makes more sense that time: 1. cotto at 145 is a better legacy fight than mosley at light welter. 2. cotto-pac is within top rank and is being set-up by arum back then even before the noise being made by mosley. 3. cotto is perceived back then to be a better money fight for pac because GBP would not have any cut from pac which they would if pac fights a GBP fighter.
Hey puga_ni_nana, do you give Mayweather any pass at all for not fighting Margarito and Cotto seeing that they were Top Rank fighters and there was a lot of contention between Floyd and Arum?:think
Stop pushing the point about Mosley fighting him at 140, this was offered as a last desperate move by Shane to get the fight made when they were in talks with Cotto, he wanted the fight at 147 but didn't think he could make 142 so Roach wasn't interested. You make it sound like he wanted 140 all along and didn't offer his title up at 147. 1. Mosley at 147 would have been better than Cotto for his legacy at 147. 2. Pacquiao had fought DLH, Hatton, Marquez and Barrera who were all connected to Golden Boy in 4 of his previous 5 fights so fighting another GB opponent was not a problem. 3. Cotto being better money than Mosley was an excuse which everyone back tracked on when Mosley done more money with Floyd than Pac did with Cotto.
you have pac fans claimimg that pac fought the winner of cotto-mosley, end of story. however, after that, cotto was stopped margo, while molsey annihilated him. so if you're going to bring up the cotto-mosley fight, why don't you bring up the fights they had with margo, that happened afterward?. because after that, mosley was considered the no.1 ww in the world. the two most logical reasons for pac fight cotto instead of mosley 1. Money- this seems to be the main reason. cotto is a bigger draw then mosley and thats just the truth. and since both pac and cotto are arum fighters, it was easy to do business since you know arum is handling the whole thing. 2. Better match up- along with the money issue, this also COULD have been considered. both are tough opponets, but cotto has shown more vulnerability in his career then Mosley has. mosley is know for having a great chin. it would have been tougher for pac to ko mosley, a man who has never been koed, then cotto ( who was tkoed a year before facing pac). In short, did he duck mosley imo, no. cotto was still a tough opponent. no did pac and/or his team rather face cotto for other reasons, that seems to be the likely reason.
so do you understand that pac-cotto is being set-upped by arum as early as cotto-clottey fight? this offer from mosley is a good back-up option back then coz people seemed contented with the coming pac-cotto fight. they are keeping mosley back then as a reserve if a cotto negotiations would not be finalized. fight at 140 is a last ditch offer by mosley but if pac is only after easy fights, he should have accepted this.
in essense yes. but he should have fought at least one of these top welters back then especially cotto in 2008.
The main reason Pac fought Cotto is due to Floyd bitching out by fighting Lightweight JMM. If anybody ducked anybody, it would be Floyd ducking Pac.
Fair enough. I always though so too. However I thought he should have even tried to make to fights to send a message that he's willing to fight them. However, at this stage in his career, his ego won't allow him to call out anyone because of his perceived status. ODLH was an exception because he ODLH was the undisputed cash cow and face of boxing and Floyd wanted that position.
If I recall correctly, Mosley actually offered to put his WW title on the line even if the fight were at 140. That fight would've been terrible though as Mosley may have died on the scales. I don't know if I agree with #1 but your other 2 points are well taken. Mosley was ducked, the only question really is if it came from Pacquiao, Roach or Arum.
yes i remember this. back then there are three options and floyd seemed more likely than mosley. but floyd never wanted to fight pac immeadiately and arum wanted to cash-out on cotto before he leaves for GBP(news back then).
Not really, no. It wasn't like that was the fight everybody was calling for and Pacquiao fought Cotto, which was a huge test as his first proper welterweight encounter. Then you had the Pacquiao-Mayweather negotiations and Mosley was fighting Berto so Pacquiao fights Clottey, another huge welterweight test. With Mayweather-Mosley, the situation was such that because Mosley was the best opponent available and his fight with Berto had collapsed, had he not faced Mosley that would have been a clear case of ducking him. Pacquiao wouldn't fight Mosley now because we've seen how faded Shane is and Pacquiao would destroy him. Prime for prime Mosley beats Pacquiao, probably by knock out.
