Sullivan wouldn't have fought Bowe because John L. was a chicken**** who didn't fight black fighters.

He had no problem with fighting George Godfrey.

Actually, I seriously doubt that John Sully was over age 40 when that photo was snapped...... Sully looks retired, but only for a few scant yrs at the time of that photo.......... I'd guess that shot was snapped prior to 1900..... Since Sully was hatched in 1858, He must've been under 42 yrs of age at that juncture......

I've seen Sully in some shots around circa--1915 and he looked old, gray, fat & shitty.......

I'm not sure when Sully gave up the bottle, but I think it was about 10 yrs prior to his circa--1918 death....... I think Sully croaked officially at age 59, so he was prolly still a heavy boozer until ages 48 to 50.......

I'v only heard stories and read old tales about G. Godfrey......... BUT! Despite him being an enigma, he had poor management and was often lazy..... STILL! Old farts claim he was talented and damn good--when motivated to be good........ And, at 6' 4" to 6' 6" tall and 240 pounds, he was a monster........

I am not sure when it was taken but it was certainly not anywhere near his prime.

Cameras were few and far between in Sullivans prime and they probably required you to stand still for half an hour.

    Wrong Godfrey.

I mean the original not Feabe Smith.

The original "Old Chocolate" was a small pressure fighter and a good puncher. He nearly ended up fighting Sullivan twice but on both ocasions circumstances prevented it.

Well, Sully was age 34 in 1892, so his prime was just about done with there....... And yes, Sully looked like he was pretty frozen for that shot taken by a man with a camera.... Still, I guess it was prior to 1900 based on the looks of things and Sully still having dark hair......

I can think of a few nouns that could describe John Sullivan, but "chicken****" definitely isn't one of them. It amazes me how easily a young guy can say such a thing about a World Heavyweight Champion who has been dead for 92 years. When I was a young man, I wouldn't have dreamed of saying such a thing about anyone, let alone a dead ex-champ.

Johnny Sully was no Chicken****, but, the sum ***** did duck some black dude's who were capable of doing some damage.......

ALSO! Let it be told, white supremacy or not during the 1880s and 90s, "White" ticket buyers would still pay to see a man like Sully beat a Black "Brother" to a pulp.... Point is, Money was to be made........ So it doesn't make sense to me to avoid black competition during that time frame........ Fear of losing to a black man in front of the typically white onlooker at ringside must've been a factor to a great extent in white guys avoiding black dude's in the ring.......

Sullivan might well have avoided Peter Jackson since he was getting older and Jackson kept getting better.

It should be noted in his defence however that he took the fight with Killrain under some prety unfavourable circumstances. He was coming off a bout of illnes that he had not been expected to survive, and was actualy on crutches when he started negotiations for the fight. On top of that he was badly disipated by years of alcoholism and seen as a spent force by many in the press.

If Killrain had actualy beaten him, many students of the era would be reluctant to give him credit for it because of Sullivans condition.

Sully did suffer from Alcohol poisoning / Bery Bery from time-to-time...... He was confined to a bed at certain junctures from binging too hard on the bottle.......

"Bery Bery" is a term used for chronics who live off the bottle and lack vitamins and minerals in their bodies due to excessive alcohol intake... Bery Bery is also deadly........

John Sully was a lucky ******* in that sense........ His intake of booze is legendary..... He drank enough in one sitting to kill a rhino.......

Later in his career he was walking off moving trains and crashing ponycarts while drunk. He drank himself into a coma a couple of times.

All in all it is amazing that he lived as long as he did.

I'm sure he had Cirrhosis of the liver to a certain degree before quitting the bottle........ Even as far back as 1900, a doctor was able to tell if one's liver was failing....... Had Sully not quit when he did he prolly would've died at least 5 yrs before he actually did......

Also, I am surprised he was not (I think he wasn't) a diabetic later in life.....

In truth, since doctors were not able to perform heart bypass surgery until the middle 1960s, many folks died from heart failure due to blockage of the arteries back in the old days.......

Statistics show that American's who cook with lard and fatty bacon greases and drink booze like fishes, often have clogged arteries by age 50....... Prior to 1970, that was the normal way to cook foods.......... Oh, then toss a pack or two of cigs per day onto that pile and you are basically a ticking time bomb......

My grandpa on my mom's side cooked his bacon, hash browns and eggs with bacon grease in a single pot each day and drank beer and smoked Paul Mall cigs and, croaked at age 56 in 1975........ He had bypass surgery just 4 yrs earlier......

I dont know how old Sullivan is there, but he's probably in better shape than Bowe was in his last fight.
