This Saturday, Oakland's Andre Ward defends his WBA Super Middleweight Championship for the first time, against the once-beaten Allan Green. A clean-living, God-fearing, proud American, Ward is unbeaten as a pro, and as an amateur since 1998, winning a Gold medal at the 2004 Olympics on the way. These ingredients combine to produce an appetizing promotional prospect. But are they enough to create a new star of boxing?

I've head Ward referred to as "more science than sensation", but his switch-hitting style, combined with his technical and athletic gifts, provide an entertaining spectacle in my eyes at least. But does he have the personality to cross-over into the mainstream? The constant flag-waving and the "Son of God" nickname irritate me, but could have an appeal, particularly in the States. He's got the Olympic Gold in his trophy cabinet, and potential sponsors could see the attraction of a good role-model, a bland image to some, but perhaps one that boxing could do with right now.

What do you all think? Has he got the potential to reach the pinnacle of boxing, as a world champion and cross-over superstar? He has the chance to take a step closer on Saturday night.

It helps that he is American, lets see him win the supersix and wait how he goes from there.

Ward has the right circumstances to become a star. He has the skills and personality and being in the Super Six gives him the opponents. If he wins the Super Six then I think he will be somewhat of a big deal. Not on a Mayweather or Pacquaio level but still a big name. If he wins the Super Six and goes on to beat say guys like Bute and Dawson then I think he will be one of boxing's top names, but thats a lot of ifs.

I can't see Ward becoming a superstar. But you never know, like borgia said 'he has to win the super six first'. And that's by no means a certainty.

Maybe, but I find him cringeworthy with all his God **** and his awful, awful moniker. I want my p4p stars to be interesting and have personality not be some kind of religious freak/sheep.

Anyway, I'm putting a cheeky bet on Green beating him.

I think it's more likley that he becomes a superstar among boxing fans, but just another name among casual fans. He doesn't have the kind of personality or style that attracts the layman. Just to be clear, I blame the layman and not Ward.

But the way he destroyed Kessler, I cant see anyone in the super six beating him except maybe Dirrell(who should be undefeated) out slicking him.

Don't forget the circumstances in wich he beat up Kessler. I think he would have won anyway but don't forget how Kessler's face got messed up.
I see Abraham beating him, seriously!
