Tyson vs. Sullivan, Fitz, Jeffries on the Same Night

The thing about Tyson is he can knock, sub 200lb men like Fitz/Sullivan who have no reach advantage, have a speed disadvantage and are easy for Tyson to KO in the first because they are small/weak in comparison to what Tyson was used to dealing with. Much like he ko'd the technically superior Spinks in the 1st, these weaker men get blasted out. Do you not think Tyson could have taken another fight immediately after Spinks left the ring? Jeffries may take a bit longer but he's still an easy target without a jab or much of a defense

These are very easy fights for Tyson

 

No one here's ever seen footage of John L. Sullivan in his prime, or any of his opponents.
Maybe he was capable of knocking out Tyson in 1 round, who can even start to predict ?

Fitzsimmons and Jeffries present similar, though not quite as extreme, problems. We haven't seen enough to make head-to-head predictions against fighters like Tyson, who we have footage and knowledge of in abundance.

 

I saw him with my own eyes in his prime when I was in my late twenties. Lightning came from his eyes, fireballs from his arse...and don't listen to boxrec. He was at least 6'10. Tyson had problems knocking out some of the taller fighters.

Seriously though, Sullivan might have been better than Tyson.

... or he might have been worse than Jesse Ferguson.

We just cant tell.

 

As said it's impossible to predict the answer due to lack of footage and I'd say it's quite an insult to simply assume Tyson can just smash through these old school legends.

 

I reckon nigel benn would take out hagler,ketchell and fitz on the same night,while sucking a lollipop kojak style,with a little lemon twist.

I also reckon any decent classic poster could take out pachilles,PP,itry,mendoza and rooster in the first paragraph of the first page of the first thread...

The obvious thought is that Tyson does a Marvis Frazier on both Sullivan and Fitz and likely a Bruno 2 on Jeffries ...

If the old timers mentioned were transported direct to Las Vegas 1987 to fight based on a prime Tyson's skill set it is very possible ... Tyson would be a terrible style match up for Sullivan and Fitz just like he would for Dempsey, Marciano or Frazier ... explosive out of the gate, incredibly fast, hard hitting and well conditioned .. Jeffries remains the huge unknown ... I tend to believe that if he were around today and trained properly he could be a huge force ... however a 1900 model I'm just not sold ...

MY point is that this particular question is not that crazy ...

 

What do you base your view of Sullivan's chances against Tyson on ?

 

I doubt it,these guys were all champions and hard men.Im not saying Mike would not beat all of them,he is bigger and his training and style is more advanced but to do it one after the other in the same night would not happen.

 

I think you're forgetting the obvious. Sullivan could grow a mustache that would put any of Tyson's attempts at facial hair to shame. This is historical fact and germane to this discussion.

 

Lets also not forget the fact fitzie was a far superior sheet metal beater than gerard.

 

Fair question. Everything that I can.

His size and weight which are pretty much confirmed. All the newspapre coverage that exisits that I could get me eyes on ... Adam's terrific Sullivan book. His own autobiography. Isenberg's great book on Sullivan.

His style is pretty much undisputed .. he had very fast hands, terrific stamina, a very good chin and legitimate one punch power. He was not a defensive wizard. He never fought anyone close to Tyson.

Can I be 100% sure ? Definately not. I can only say that in our generations rules and conditions I don't see it as a terrific stylistic match up for Sullivan.
