Right hand against right hand, about the same level of boxing skills, Baer would seem to have the better whiskers. Patterson said Ingo hit harder then Liston, Dempsey thought that Baer at his very best would be hard to beat by anyone. Your pick here......
Max Baer probably. I dont think Johansson can fight in the style and rhythm to outpoint Baer, so it would just be a slugging match, or a mugging match, a lot of loafing and some heavy punching. Baer was bigger, stronger and more durable. At his best he beat Max Schmeling in a 10-round tussle, I'd expect him to win against Johansson.
I think a lot of this is going to come down to who had the better staying power, and for me that has to be Max Baer.. I don't see this bout as being a chess match, but rather a slug fest, and while Ingo had enough power to stop Baer, he'd have to take loads of punishment before finally making it happen.. Max is the more proven warrior.
Baer would take Ingo too lightly and before he knew it Ingo sneaks in his right and puts Baer to sleep....
Depends if Baer comes in focus imo. Had the Baer that show up vs Braddock enter the ring, I not sure if I would bet money on Baer, though he can still wack Ingo out there in a few rounds perhaps.
Baer if he can pressure Johansson. Don't underestimate Johansson's boxing skills though, he has the flicking jab and movement to present the raw and unpolished Baer problems. Baer's unorthodox rushes will probably keep Johansson from getting set to punch though, and Baer had the chin to take Schmeling's best right hands. Johansson would do well in spots as Baer coasts, but when he decides to take it seriously he'd hurt Johansson and eventually catch him and finish him.
I think the key thing here is Baer has the far better chin than Johansson. Johansson could not take a punch.
You dont have to take a punch if your opponent swings like a redneck in a barfight. Baer`s style is outdated and Ingo was an excellent counterpuncher and the outcome is obvious...
Ingo was a very exciting fighter to watch, but I just don't think he had that many quality fights to be honest.. Of course, sparking an undefeated, prime Machen in one round, then following up by brutally Ko'ing a peak Patterson is enough to get him respect, but at the end of the day he's 2-2 against the only two world class fighters he faced. Top that off with the fact that he retired with less than 30 pro fights, and I wouldn't give him much of a chance in too many fantasy match-ups..
Max carried knockout power in his hook as well as his cross (check out what an aroused Maxie's hook does to sucker punching provocateur King Levinski in their abbreviated exhibition). Baer had advantages in height, reach and chin. He exchanged some nice stiff jabs late with Schmeling. Opponents of Ingo's size were sometimes able to beat Max, but it typically took more skill, stamina, ruggedness and experience than Ingo brought to the table. (Risko, Farr, Braddock, Uzcudun and Loughran had an awful lot more seasoning behind them, and Max did in fact dominate Farr over the championship distance in their rematch.)
Yeah, it would turn into a slug fest, and then baer would have the chin and power to take out Johansson. Baer would eat up Ingo's Bingo, but I don't think ingo would be able to take that overhand of Baer.
Ingo has one of the weakest resumes of any Heavyweight Champ, imo. Two wins over world class opponents ,one of which was avenged emphatically twice, the rest were Euro level guys. Baer had something like 11 over top rated men. Early ko win for Baer.
