There will be a 10 count in memory of John Duddy's uncle Jack during Top Rank's Latin Fury 15 on June 26 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.
"It's the right thing to do," said Bob Arum. "This has been such a heart-breaking ordeal for John and the Irish people."
Duddy, who takes on Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, said his uncle was killed by British soldiers while in a civil rights march in Derry, Ireland in 1972. A tribunal report released this week announced that all Irish citizens killed while in the march were unarmed and that the British Parachute Regiment had lost control, firing weapons without warning. It has been described for years as Bloody Sunday.
Uncle Jack Duddy was killed by a single bullet to the chest. Witnesses said he was unarmed and was not engaging with the soldiers when he was shot.
"His name was John, but everyone called him Jackie," Duddy told IrishCentral.com. "His full name was John Francis and I was named John Francis after him. He was a boxer too. Jackie was 17 and he was my father's idol while growing up. My father was 12 when he was killed.
"Uncle Jack is one of the main reasons I became a boxer," John said.
Duddy added "....Bloody Sunday was something that was never spoken about while I was growing up. It's great to see justice."
    ++++
Duddy, training for weeks in New York, will battle the Son of the Legend - Julio Cesar Chavez Jr of Culiacan, Mexico - in the main event of Top Rank's Latin Fury 15 at the Alamodome. Mexican legend Marco Antonio Barrera of Mexico City will take on Adilton DeJesus of Brazil just before Chavez Jr and Duddy get into the ring

I have to say I am delighted that they are taking the time out before the fight this 10 count, its not just for Jackie but for all the victims of that day.

    RIP

I wonder IF anybody is going to show the Duddy fight even highlights the next day will do me. Setanta Ireland the next day would be the only station we could have some sort of chance seeing it on it. Or BBC NI could come up with the goods. Also with it being for a sort of World title you would think someone would sort us out but its a shame that no one will show it as it stands....

Waldron v Sweeney - am I way off the mark thinking that there is a genuine appetite out there to see this fight?

Be that is Mayo, Dublin or elsewhere - or is it just a parochial squabble that would only fly west of the Shannon?

    Thoughts?

    The storm feels frozen out

Ballinrobe boxer Michael Sweeney feels frozen out of a shot at an Irish title which he considers is rightfully his following victories over Jamie Power and Tommy Tolan.

Hungry for baubles, Sweeney saw his first opportunity to accumulate an inaugural title slip through his fingers when one most highly anticipated Irish title fights of recent years, against Dubliner Ian Tims, was cancelled just days before the duo were to square up on the Andy Lee-Mamadou Thiam undercard last month in Limerick.

‘The Storm’ was hoping to breeze into a slot on the Dolphil promotion at the CityWesy Hotel, Dublin on August 7 and as current Irish light-heavyweight champion John Waldron was already listed on the card and without an opponent, Sweeney called Don O’Leary to gauge his appetite for hosting a showdown for the title which Waldron snatched from under Jamie Power’s nose in front of the Limerickman’s home crowd.

“I rang up Don (O’Leary, the Dol in DolPhil) to see if I could get my shot at the Irish title against John Waldron. Don said he couldn’t put me on because the card was full and it wasn’t making sense to have that fight (between two Mayomen) in Dublin. To his credit he said he could fit me on to a card in September or October but that’s not really any good to me because I need to keep the momentum going,” explained Sweeney.

    Murray goes for treble
16 June 2010 - Press Release Unbeaten Cavan lightweight Andy Murray is surely one of the World's busiest professional boxer's right now. The European number three and reigning Irish champion stretched his perfect record to 20 wins with 11 KO's in Belfast last weekend when he scored a second round stoppage win over the normally durable Jon Baguley.
That was the second bout in a three-fight run that started in Limerick last month and will culminate in the Neptune Stadium, Cork on Saturday, June 26 when he features on the Yanjing Beer Fight Night as part of 'The Undefeated's'.
Murray is one of six unbeaten boxers on the card joining fellow Irishmen Gary 'Spike' O'Sullivan and Willie 'Big Bang' Casey while the exciting Cork based Cuban trio of Alexei Acosta, Luis Garcia and Mike Perez also feature.
Murray opened his year with a impressive headlining win live on RTÉ over Oisin ***an in an Irish title clash and the former European Union Champion is now within touching distance of a shot at European Champion and namesake, John Murray.
The Mancunian is targeting a possible World title clash up at light welterweight with Amir Khan but Andy Murray's rise up the European ratings means he is now knocking on the door of a title shot.
“I feel I'm ready for a European title shot now but I realise I might have to be patient so it's great to be as busy as I am right now,” said Murray.
“For any pro I think that fighting regularly is the key to improving and progressing up the ranks. It keeps you in routine and it keeps you focused because you know once you have one fight out of the way there is another coming up just around the corner so it keeps you sharp.
“I'll be ready for a title shot whenever it comes around be it against John Murray or anyone else. If it's Murray then I think that our styles would make for a great fight. I've watched a lot of John's fights and I've a lot of respect for him. He's fit, strong and has a style similar to mine so I think it would be a great fight for the fans.”
Murray faces Hungary's Laszlo Robert Balogh in Cork next weekend where he will hope to stretch his unbeaten record to 21 straight wins. Murray's manager, Brian Peters has been delighted with his recent progress. “This will be Andy's third fight in just over six weeks and you can see the improvement in his boxing fight by fight. He's becoming a very rounded professional and when his European title shot comes around he'll be more than ready for it.”
Tickets for the Yanjing Beer Fight Night priced E25 & E50 are available from Ticketmaster, all Mahers Sports Outlets, Neptune Stadum 021 4395873, The Wilton Pub 021 4344454, Patrick Thomas 087 9393586, Gary O'Sullivan 085 1789544 and Willie Casey 086 3136925.

Anyone else dissappointed with Murrays fights post ***an? after probably his best opponent and best win and he has fought two 6 rounders since against only ok opponents? and is now fighting an eight rounder? for a fighter who is 20 and 0 i think its not good to be having 6 rounders especially one after another? and wdidnt ring magazine say Mccloskey was the most protected fighter a few years back? and hes now 21 and 0 full euro champ and in most of the top tens while Murray is nowhere near top 10s and is still fightin 6 rounders?

I wouldnt say I'm dissappointed but I'd definitely expect him to step up after this particular fight in Cork. I think he had to make up for his time off with injury and get back in the average joe type fans consience because How would Peters sell out a bill other then the national stadium with Murray headlining other then by building him up. In fairness he is still young enough too. I think 1 decent opponent and then a shot at EBU or a top 20 ranked lightweight to bump him up the ratings.
