Sam Langford v Michael Spinks

Langford by KO and I don't usually go for old timers over moderns. SPinks height/jab may be tricky, his power could hurt Langford, I fancy Langford to get inside and beat Spinks up though, not as emphatically as Tyson by any means and Spinks may hurt or drop him.

I would like to see more of Langford to see how good he is at slipping the jab, I'd like to see his video played at normal speed to, oh well. In all honesty I wouldn't put money on this as I just can't see how good Langford is

Spinks is so awkward. Langford seems terrifying, a small rottweiler constantly chasing his man down, bombing in close and landing on bigger opponents with relative ease.

I'd probably edge towards Spinks PTS over 12. Would Langford take him out over 15? Hard for me to say. I really, really rate Spinks H2H at Light Heavy, and like PP I'd like to see more of Langford. As good as he looks against Laing and Flynn, they ain't Spinks.

 

This video shows Langford coming forward with both hands down. He is looking to get into position, he wants his opponent to fire a shot to create openings. In a way his hands down style is a trap to create countering opportunities, but it is also an exploitable weakness. Despite being very short his arms look long and his straight punches means he isn't at too much of a disadvantage on the outside

These old timers with their hands down remind me allot of Naseem Hamed, the game plan was the same, but against a fast boxer it leaves them open and very reliant on being able to slip and counter and susceptable to being hurt and outboxed.

Thanks to GreatA for the vid, it is a much better example with how Langford would handle a boxer than his inside brawl with Flynn

I'm undecided on this fight, really not a fan of Mike Spinks style though

 

I think that Spinks' variety with the left could see Langford remain idle at times waiting to land the big shot. He seems a fairly nuanced fighter for a short come-forward fighter from the footage available, and as you've pointed out PP, Langford had an extraordinary reach for a 5'6 man.

I rate Langford higher P4P, but don't fancy him against Spinks. I think Spinks was tough as well, but am sticking with the theory that Foster didn't like taking it back. Although I think Langford would be a perfect opponent for Foster to time and take out, I'd give Langford a better chance at sparking Bob.

I find it hard to judge Langford H2H, despite his achievements, at least against the upper echelon of the divisions he prospered in.

But he looks impressive in all the footage I've seen him in. I fancy him, in the era he was in, to give Spinks real hassle over 15. Moreso than Qawi anyway, who I rate very highly and who Spinks dealt with very well IMO.

No footage ( or very little ) of Langford to even verify what he looked like and what type of fighter he was, but what the hell.... This is the classic forum, land of make believe, folk stories, and legends told of three headed monsters and fire breathing dragons......

Gotta go with Langford, due to his mystical powers and unmatched divinity..

 

Spinks is a challenging match up with is jab, speed and his own power but I don't see him holding Langford off .. Qwai gave him a stressful bout and I believe Langford was quicker, braver and a much better puncher ..

 

I try to be objective with fighters but Langford is one of the few exceptions.

 

Spinks reach 76" , Langford's 72 1/2".

 

I take Spinks at 175. Langford didnt do anywhere near as well as a light heavy, as he did as a heavy. I think Spinks' record (at the weight) is too good.

What is seen as Langford's best win as a light heavyweight?
