Neither of these men were very good at cutting off the ring. Punchers want to have their feet planted at every time to produce maximum torque, which is why both of them seemed to "shuffle" forward at times. Who would you say had better footwork and is there much between them in that regard?

I really don't think there was that much between them. Hard one to decide.

Louis had marginally better footwork ,he could get up on his toes if the situation demanded it.The Max Baer fight showed his feet were allways in the right position.
Liston's fault was, he never learned to cut off the ring.

Picture in your mind Clay vs. Louis. Does it look like Clay-Liston I or II? It shouldn't...

    Louis.

Louis had perfect footwork. Perfect for his style. I'm pretty drunk, but if anyone wants me to to explain why, I am up for that.

Liston also has generally underated footwork, but he's still ok for his style. Louis though? For his style, his footwork was ideal. Ideal.

Liston learned an aggressive alternative for cutting off the ring. It was boss.

Even though it's clearly Louis to me, this is still a good thread and conversation starter. Both often get written off as mere plodders in this department.

I actually think Clay vs Louis would look quite similar to the first few rounds of Clay vs Liston.. Clay dancing around, Joe trying to close the distance and get those combinations in. But Louis will have better rounds from 6 on, when Ali's feet start to tire a bit.

    So.....

Your team wins, you get drunk. Your team loses, you get more drunk.

You play a draw........ you get drunk. Gotcha.:happy

I would say Louis is better at sliding in and out of range. I think are both adapt at trapping their opponents on the ropes. Liston against whitehurst showed good mobility utilizing his tools on the outside and forcing whitehurst from getting inside. Louis against Baer looked amazing sliding in and out of range away from baers firepower, and into louis's target range. Louis took very nice angles.
