I guess it depends on the pros you sparred with, ie what level and their strengths. I've only sparred with a couple and they were taking it easy with me but you notice that their skill level is a lot higher and that they are a lot more prepared to take shots to land heavier shots (not that i caught them with too many mind!)
i knew i was gonna get hit with a shot, u know in boxing there is that split second where u know ur gonna get hit. well instead of one shot it was 3, and then a jab, and then he was out of range.
I think there is alot of bull**** in this thread, a good fighter is a good fighter amateur or pro, alot of amateurs are better in all areas than a pro and vice versa. You take a fighter on their own merits, a pro fighter is human like everybody else. Generally pros hit harder, are more flat footed and don't let punches bother them as much. Amateurs (good amateurs) are usually quicker and more technically 'correct'. It's not like other sports where you have to be very good to be a pro, any bum can become a pro fighter.
I fully agree with this. There are shitty pro's nowhere near the level of good amateurs, and there are good pro's far beyond the level of shitty amateurs. Charlie Zelenoff is a pro. Andrew Hartley is a pro. You think you'd be impressed with his skillset in sparring? You really think he'd hit you with 3 bombs before you'd notice it and be out of range?
Calmness and they disguise the shots a lot better. Shots just seem to arrive on your head! Where did that come from! Sparred an ex world level guy one (and now a trainer) - could have beaten me with one hand. Jab, smash, jab, smash...good job he pulled his punches - but he couldnt miss!
Spot on!!! a fighter's a fighter, in boxing you choose to go pro its not like football (soccer to you yanks) where you must be chosen to be a professional footballer, every fighter has their own style, the only difference I see between pros & ams is that pros tend to be more flat footed to conserve energy & lean into their shots more, other than that there's no difference at all, & to be honest pro boxing is boring, unless its elite world class fighters, like Mayweather, Pacquaio, pro fights involve lots of clinchin & little technique, I'd rather watch Olympic Amateur Boxing at a world class level than two pro bums fighting for a meal & a bus ticket
atschZelenoff and Hartley aren't pro's. They are pretenders. A pro is someone who can beat other decent fighters. Anyone can enter a boxing ring and lose not many can get in there and win at a good level.
No they are pro's, just very shitty pro's. His point was valid. There are world class amateurs and **** amateurs just like there are world class pro's and **** pro's.
RDJ by your own admission you've only sparred one pro and he wasn't great. I think you need some more experience to really pass comment on this. Calling those guys pro's is just being pedantic, I think we all knew what the OP meant when he said pro's. Every gym I've been in has 3 or 4 of them and all of the top amateurs spar with them regularly. They are the most respected guys in the gym and often the oldest. They are the guys that don't always look really flashy, slick or fast but everytime u watch them spar u are impressed by how easy they make it look.
Ok, well I see what everyone is saying. Of course there are bad pros. There are bad amateurs, there are bad sparring partners, there are bad coaches etc... Me, of course. I've never boxed a "bad pro." The guys I have boxed who are pros, have pretty much been faster, stronger, had better footwork, more ring experience. etc. So...I don't know.
Ok, for sake of the discussion. Most good, fast and experienced guys I've sparred were good, fast and experienced.
