When I think of Bivins I think of Marshall and when I think of Machen I think of Folley... anyway, thoughts on these "mythical" match-ups-
O dear. Poor Lloyd. He is just too small for Zora. Lloyd was a super middleweight at his biggest. He never tangled with the big boys. Folley by knockout. Bivins vs Machen? Very congenial fight here. Chess match the whole way. I think Bivins might have been the slightly better technician, but machen was a bit more offensive and was the bigger/tall of the two. Bivins, ironically, had the much longer reach with his octopus arms. Could go either way.
I disagree, I have never really seen Bivin's as a defensive counter-puncher, with the footage we have of him he likes to get inside work the body abit and fire shots over the top with his long arms, doing countering on the inside but forcing the fight abit. I really dont see how Machen is 'a bit more aggresive' here, as he was pretty much a pure classical boxer who used his left hand to jab and counter-punch, and didnt really do much else in terms of offence. I do agree on Bivins being the better teechnician but it might not be in the traditional sense.
Bivins-Machen - Machen looks slicker from what I can gage, more movement and. Bivins isn't a very attractive boxer from what I've seen and I fancy Machen's skills to get the job done Marshall-Folley - Folley is too big for him and probably underrated himself with the level of skill he showed
Time for you to re-watch some film [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c0BW_fQrRWU&feature=related[/ame] Machen has underrated offensive firepower. Nino Valdes was a big ranked durable heavyweight who had not been stopped in many years. All the footage you have seen of him was most likely taken place when he was well past his prime. Take a look at this footage, of him in his prime http://www.youtube.com/watch?gl=JP&hl=ja&v=IvgAga3Exlo Notice how much lighter he is on his feet, how many more times he utilizes his left jab. Seems to me he does nothing but clinch on the inside..he likes to do all his work on the outside countering with his long arms...and taking control of the fight with his left jab.
Match-ups not usually thought of. I like that. I will take Machen to top Bivins. Lloyd Marshall was a very good fighter. But Zora Folley was a little better than 'very good'. And as already stated, he was bigger than Lloyd. I don't see much problems here for Zora.
Bivins vs Machen would be a good match never thought about that one, maybe Bivins. I think it would the distance. Marshall is a good few weight classes below Folley, Lloyd was a small light heavy now a days probably a super middle.
Machen was a puncher until the Johansson fight I'd say. He actually started out his career by scoring 10 straight knockouts. There's still some film of Bivins that I've yet to see, so I'll hold off my opinion on how the fight would go until I've viewed all his available fights. It could be that the Charles and Moore fights are misleading as they happened at the latter part of his career.
