Yeah, that's why I end up giving this to the original sugar every time. Leonard can move around as much as he wants but Robinson can move almost as well and on top of that cuts the ring. Out of all the ATG fighters, I think the ones most likely to beat the original sugar are the demolition hammer wrecking ball swarmers like Armstrong and Greb, simply overwhelming him with volume, power and chin.
Well yeah, it's proven that such styles are presented with the best window of opportunity to beat Robinson. On a personal note, i'd favour him over any welterweight, but that's only in the one-off hypothetical sense. Of course you'd have to see him losing if say him, Basilio, Napoles, Walker, Leonard etc etc were all thrown into an actual era together. Hard to come out unscathed.
No doubt. I think Hearns-Robinson would be a way more interesting and competitive fight than Leonard-Robinson as well, not sure how sugar would adapt to a boxer-puncher like Tommy.
It gets brought up every now and then. I'd take Robinson by stoppage ultimately, too good an all out offensive fighter in my opinion. Hearns is no joke though, it would be a classic most likely.
Robinson TKO's Hearns with a brutal finish late in the fight. His left hook sets up and crushing right hook and Hearns drops just like Hatton did against Pac. Good point by Teeto, Leonard would be facing a guy who could dance just like him and when push came to shove was a little better in every department. Still, I think a very close fight. How about SRL vs Kid Gavilan?
On Gavilan-Leonard, who knows? The highest level both men are at. Guaranteed to go the distance, i'd probably lean towards Leonard. Both are versatile, both are fast, Leonard hits harder but Gavilan's vhin is iron. Gavilan's footwork is fantastic, Leonard's lateral and circular movement is fantastic. It would probably come down to a fight, inside Gavilan is more skilled the way i see it, but Leonard has that speed of hand and would rally with him all the way. So hard to say. Hard for anyone to do well with Gavilan outside, but i think Leonard could do well there, jabbing and slugging that is.
SRR said he hit Gavilan with some of the hardest punches he's ever landed on ANYONE and Gavilan continued to exchange. I guess he was a tricky boxer with his bolo punches. He had SRR stunned many times in their two-fight encounter. In terms of hand speed, who in today's fight game does he compare with?
Yeah, he apparently basically said **** fighting this guy, i'm boxing him from now on. There's not really a directly comparable Gavilan-esque fighter right now in my opinion. Oscar had a similar approach in his prime but he was a bit different and much poorer imo
Here's a vid of Gavilan talking about his two great fightswit the original Sugar Ray(unfortunate for us they're not filmed**SIGH**). Go to 4:40. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zgXoQo2IMDE[/ame]
Very impressed with Gavilan, like somone mentioned, a terrific inside fighter with plenty of heart and an jaw made of iron. He's in my top 5 welters of all-time no doubt about that.
I think this comes down to Robinson's skills vs. Leonard's abaility to beat whoever is in front of him. I don't think that Robinson has ever ben in the ring with anyone who was thought to be able to beat him and comming out the winner. Leonard in beating Duran, Hearns and Hagler has. I see this being close being a fight that could be scored either way.
At welter it's extremely close, but my money is on the real "Sugar Ray" for reasons explained. At middewight, Robinson by tko. The SRL who fought at middleweight in 1987, gets stopped by the 1951 SRR in 11 rounds.
Everyone thought Hagler was going to handle Leonard easily as well. I understand that Hagler is not Robinson, but he's a arguebly a top 5 middleweight. My point is never count Ray Leonard out.
I totally agree with you, the bigger the fight, the better he got. SRR is not a lock to beat him, although I think he would, I would not be suprised if Leonard got him.
