That would have been around the time he fought Mathis Jr. I dont think Tyson was prepared to fight Mercer. Maybe instead of Bruno in 96, it would have been a better step up in class as far as work to prepare him for Holyfield.
If only Mcall defended against Bruno and Tyson had to face him, things might have been different. Tyson would have been better off fighting Mcall for the title he certainly would have been forced to go the distance. Instead he got a bunch of scaredy cats.

This Tyson was not in shape to fight Mercer ... the 86 Tyson pounds out a clear decision ..

A slighlty faded Tyson vs. Mercer at his best. Mercer gave Holyfield some trouble and Lewis even more trouble around this period in time.

I think it goes the distance. Tyson's speed would bother Mercer early but Mercer's ability to take Tyson's punches would bother Tyson. I think Mercer would have some good moments in the mid to late rounds but I think Tyson would do just enough to win by split-decision.

I always wanted to see McCall vs. Mercer and Tyson vs. McCall btw.

McCall used to give Tyson trouble when they sparred... doesn't really mean anything but it is what it is.

Holy was much better tuned in May of 1995 than Tyson could ever hope to be in 1995...........

The KO over McNeeley was a "nothing proved" but good payday fight night for Tyson...... That is all........

Holyfield had been retired for over a year with various health problems, he looked poor against Mercer but still scarped by. Do you honestly think Evander could deliver a better left hook than Mike at this point?

In additon to McNeely, Tyson knocked out the difficult Mathis Jr. in 95 and went on to impressively clean out the belt holders soon afterwards. Holyfiled would go on to be stopped Bowe in another poor performance blamed on health problems.

Mercer never really had the style to beat Tyson. He wasnt as fluid as Douglas, nor would he impose the same mauling tactics as Holy. Basically he'd just be in front of Mike, and trading. Even in 95 I think Mike wins, though Mercer wins a fare share of rounds.

Pre-prison Tyson beats the **** outta Mecer. The 86-88 Tyson might very well have stopped Ray.

    Mecer sometimes gets overrated.

hell yes! we saw it in the 1996 fight. tyson throws a fast, powerful hook but it is predictable and not timed. this is why holy was able to block so many of them despite their awesome speed.

holy threw a better left hook because he actually timed it rather than randomly headhunt with it.

Tyson/Holyfield is irrelevant. I can say the fight was not determined by Evander's "superior" left hook.

In regards to the subject matter, Mercer proved vunerable to the left hook while throwing his jab and while Holyfield was able to exploit this....Tyson made a career out of it. Mike near his absolute worse could take advantage of the same openings Evander had against Mercer, and with superior power and hand speed. Mercer's strong jab was problematic for the than shaky Lewis and rusty Holyfield, but even in 95-96 Mike ate guys like him alive.

Holy dropped Mike's ass with a left-hook in round 6 or so in 1996........ YES! Holy had a damn good hook at that juncture.......

Yeah, I remember Mike lunging in off balance and getting pushed over with a punch that in all likely hood didn't land. Holyfield landed better left hooks in the first round. Again, completely irrelevant, not to mention an absurd gap in logic. Holyfield didn't beat Tyson with superior punching ability, it was overall ring generalship and mental toughness that won him the fight.
