I hate it when boxers touch gloves in between rounds. Shane Mosley does this adnauseum. He was beating the hell out of Margarito, and for some strange reason Margarito continued to give him dap. Also, Jack Lowe told Pavlick to stop touching gloves with Taylor "because he's looking for sympathy". During the Ward vs. Green fight, Tarver stated that Green touched gloves with Ward, and that shows that he doesn't have the will to win, or something like that. Did this trend start in the 90's? Thoughts?
I actually agree with this. I can see why nice/good people respect the mutual respect and admission that it is just a job or a sport, not personal, but **** it. I'm neither of those things and when I see two guys in a fight I don't want them to give me any indication that they like each other. I think there was a moment in the Cotto/Pac fight when Pac went to touch gloves and Cotto ignored him. I remember loving that.
We always touched gloves in sparring alot and I think Shane does this to compose himself. I dont like it either during the course of a fight, but as far as sparring its sort of a mutual respect for working together and its become a bit of a habit for some fighters as it carries into their fights.
Don't assume. There are plenty of prominent Shanes in the sport. He could just as easily have meant Cameron. :bart
Mosley will touch gloves all the time, then a couple seconds later he throws a body shot and tries to break your rib. So normally I don't mind that. But during that one sequence when Mayweather hit him after that were touching gloves for too long and talking, I don't blame him. You shouldn't delay the action too much with your glove touching and get surprised when the guy hits you. The only times you're required to touch gloves is before the fight and before the final round. I don't really need to see the extra sportsmanship...just showing the mutual respect after the fight ends is good enough for me.
It seemed to me that Duran was exuberantly touching gloves at the beginning of each round during the middle fight with DeJesus, clearly in the spirit of high competition.
You need to watch footage of how Sammy Serrano always started his title fights. At the opening bell, he'd come out of his corner as if to touch gloves, then try to sucker punch his opponent when the hapless sucker began to reciprocate. Being a WBA titlist, he wasn't required to touch gloves, so it was a legal, but dirty maneuver.
Floyd said that after the fight. He said that Mosley said he was gonna come at him and knock him out, but then he kept wanting to touch gloves and **** before and during the round. Floyd wasn't having it.
