Yet English Football became what is today when it went to Sky. Its rubbish to say boxing's decline is down to boxing going away from terrestrial tv. If u think thats the major reason you are crazy.

Why is that football, cricket, rugby union, rugby league, golf, darts and others have done just fine being on sky yet u think boxing isnt mainstream anymore because of Sky?

Wrong. Football is the largest, most lucrative sport internationally outside of the NFL. It was also protected under the crown jewels arrangement so that most big matches would still be available on free to air.

ITV boxing was used for years to build attractions. Let's look at these two examples:

Eubank-Benn
Calzaghe

The first two had many of their early fights, including their first match against each other, on ITV. It made them stars because people saw the rivalries building. Calzaghe went to Sky. He was a relative unknown UNTIL ITV featured him. That tells you something surely?

Of course it's not all because of Sky, but it's got a lot to do with them.

The simple truth is that only 7-8m people can watch Sky Sports and, outside of the football, rarely attracts those sort of numbers.

All the other sports you mention are still featured on terrestrial as well as Sky. So your argument's just poorly thought out.

 

The FA Cup Final, Champions League Final and England games are the major attractions, what your asking for is BBC or ITV to have a contract with one promoter to show British title fights? correct me if I am wrong on that.

We need to forget about football when you talk about boxing. its at the level with Darts, Snooker, Golf, Rugby and Tennis. The difference between those sports and Boxing are that there major events are on the protected sports list which guarantees terrestrial tv coverage. The reason boxing is not on that list is because the promoters who run the sport in this country don't want it to be.

I still think the bigger fights will happen if Sky PPV are involved. Whoever said Lacy was paid more than Kessler is wrong. Calzaghe and Kessler got paid more. It was on at 2am and Warren left ITV for Setanta to secure the fight remember.

 

I'd be interested to know what numbers Hatton drew as he's only ever been a Sky fighter I think??? Surely Hatton is the biggest fighter we've had this decade??

 

Well he had that one fight on Setanta-it might have been Collazo or Urango, can't really remember.

But it was made public that the Mayweather fight did about 1.2 million sales in the UK alone, which is a pretty astonishing figure, considering that's at £15 a time.

But when he was fighting on sky (not box office) he wasn't half the draw he was when he was ubtil he went to PPV.

some fights on box office tend to do better than normal sky sports shows due to the marketing and the fact people think if its Box Office it must be a big fight. Worked for everyone but Khan
